My daughter (4yo) and her cousin (5yo) first "met" Mrs. Phipps and Snoothy when my mother bought a used copy of Learn to Read volume 1 at a yard sale. After seeing just a few minutes of it, my mother almost threw it away, thinking it seemed too boring and unsophisticated for a modern child. To her surprise, both my daughter (then 3) and her cousin (then 4) absolutely LOVED the video! Whenever they visited grandma they begged to watch the video, and often, when the video finished, they rewound it and started it again. Like the reviewer whose comments I just read, I also don't know how to rate this item because it will not play on my or anybody else's DVD player. I bought the thing new & planned on using it in class tomorrow. Opened the shrink wrap and factory seal & all I get on my machines and my neighbors' is the main menu and then an error message no matter what I select from the menu. Scary. How do these people stay in business?

No matter what any critic says, the Standard Deviants products are incredibly articulate and convey the knowledge of their topics well. They have integrity and even throw in some humor to lighten the subjects up. People who call the humor cheesy need to lighten up and broaden their sense of humor. I not only endorse this product, but the entire range of Standard Deviants products. What irritates me, is the ridiculous amounts of poor reviews because someone thinks the humor is corny. I show this to my freshman composition I classes nearly every semester, and I hear a lot of groans. They beg me not to play another one. I think some of that is "we're too cool for this" attitude, plus there is a volume 2! This video does what no video I'm aware of has ever attempted - to explain how English punctuation works. It's not an exciting subject; it's not even something most people ever think about, but the Standard Deviants have managed to make punctuation relatively entertaining. Yes, their humor is silly, even dorky; I assume these programs were made for high school students. But it's better for me to show this video than go through hours of examples and handbooks myself, thereby putting my students to sleep.
