VHS : Schoolhouse Rock! - Money Rock
This is a great video for teaching kids about money. I used to watch Schoolhouse Rock on Saturday mornings. I now have the opportunity to pass it on to my son. He has learned principals from this video that he will never forget. It is very educational and assists him in learning while not being taught in a long drawn out boring way. I would recommend this to anyone who needs help laying a foundation to build upon for their family for a long time.

I found these videos to be a good intro to concepts taught in class. (I find it easier to learn material I have been introduced to than learning from scratch.) The presentation is in a type of Saturday Night Live format.
These will not take the place of a text or class because the concepts are given in a general sense and not all pre-calculus topics are covered.

VHS : The Standard Deviants - Statistics, Parts 1, 2 & 3
I asked my college library to order this series, for possible use in my intro stats class, or for review use by my students. I've seen other Standard Deviants videos, which are generally pretty good, but this one is a bit disappointing. Disclaimer: I've only watched the first tape so far -- I hope 2 and 3 are better.

There is just too much nonsense in it for me to be able to use it in class. The first tape, for example starts with several minutes of building a typically (for SD) comical plot line around some guy wanting to strike it rich by playing a slot machine (while running the credits as an aside) -- and then, unbelievably, it does not return to the slot machine scenario during the entire first tape!!!

Yes, it's comical, and it does effectively work through ... Read More

The Standard Deviants: Statistics part 1, 2 and 3 were all very good. They helped me understand the concepts and terminology... and were even entertaining.

VHS : The Standard Deviants - Trigonometry, Parts 1 & 2
All the Standart Deviant videos are fun to watch. They have a Saturday-Night-Live format with different people and skits.
The material covered was good, and it is a great intro to those who haven't any trig background.
The video series downfall is the material not covered or covered in enough depth: trig identities, vectors, polar and rectangular conversions, imaginary number plane with radical and exponential equations. I found the material not covered to be the toughest concepts in trig. It helps to be ahead of the instructor, but the videos were no help in these tough areas.
Some of the other Standard Deviant titles are better done, but this video is still a great intro to the easier 2/3 of the material you will encounter.

VHS : The Standard Deviants: Algebra, Part 1
This is the strangest educational video that I have ever seen. The creators use a character called Idaho Jones that is "modeled" on the screen adventurer Indiana Jones. It starts with a scene similar to the opening one of "Raiders of the Lost Ark." Idaho is with a woman in a cave and has discovered a golden X. He replaces it with an algebra textbook, but it is too light, causing all the traps to be triggered. After he avoids the traps, a character modeled after the sadistic Nazi in the "Raiders" movie takes the X from him.
Throughout the remainder of the tape, there are occasional short segments of Idaho as he continues the search for the golden X. Since this is a low budget film, the acting, accents and special effects are all REALLY bad. I laughed in spite of myself. There are other characters ... Read More

This set was just what I needed. Before I saw these programs, I was getting crappy scores on the sample tests. Then I picked these up from Amazon. Wow! What a difference they made on test day! The approach is somewhat dry, but I wasn't looking to be entertained - I needed to learn how to do the math. At that, they excel.

I find the Standard Deviants to be a great review of math skills. They present the information in a fun, yet educational way. I used the Caculus video years ago for a personal review. I purchased this to use with my students in an AIS math class. I decided not to use it because it did not present the concepts in a way that I felt would be accurate and in depth enough for the students who struggle with math. I would use this with students who had a more solid conceptual understanding.
