I purchased this DVD because that I already own the VHS, and I've almost worn it out! The sets and camera "tricks" are only so-so, but the choreography is a challenge for the upper-elementary aged kids. I use "La Bamba" every year for Cinco de Mayo, and the kids don't want to leave class. Also, I've used both "Locomotion" and "Everybody Dance Now" in program presentations, complete with lighting effects. Dance steps are shown in a manner easy to follow and learn, and the kids love the "cool" music. Just keep in mind that the difficulty level makes it geared for fourth grade and above.

I was not impressed with this video. Although it is well made the children found it much too difficult and gave up. I have played it for them several times, and they always begin with enthusiasm, but soon lose interest because the dances are much too hard for the little ones (ages 2-6) Maybe this would be a good video for older children, but "Chicken Fat" still gets my favorite children's exercise video review.

VHS : Carlos Saura Dance Trilogy Part 1 - Carmen
This is one of my all-time favorite films. The color and dancing are spectacular but I think he most interesting and intelligent aspect of he film is the confusion of reality with unreality; life with an opera. The film, which starts on a concrete level becomes more and more surreal as Gades slips into a form of madness--a madness, perhaps, fated by the Gods.

He is obsessed with finding the perfect Carmen and...to their mutual destruction...he finds her. Reality and the opera become increasingly intertwined until Gades distorted reality becomes more powerful than life itself. In parallel with Bizet's Carmen, Gades falls inexplicably and helplessly in love with he faithless Carmen. I won't write more. You really need to see it yourself.

I watched this tape through first and thought, I'll never be able to do all those steps. Well, with time and practice, my husband and I are learning to love the tango.

The class is broken into three segments, with four moves each. The first two segments can be danced separately or together. The final "movie moves" segment is full of fun stuff to fool around with. Cal and his partner demonstrate the steps separately and together.

We've tried the sequences with various tangoes and they work so well! It is a great deal of fun and very romantic, once you know what you are doing.

A couple of the reviewers say that this is not true Argentine Tango. True, but that's not the only style there is. Cal says right up front that what he is teaching is a combination of three ... Read More

I use this as an option for bonus with my students when we do a basic dance unit. I am not a dancer, but I try to expose my junior high students to some basic steps. If they want to take it further for bonus I allow them to use the videos to learn more dances. They LOVE it!

This video is excellent.

I discovered this video off of another customer who reviews a lot of salsa DVDs. He said it was one of the best dance videos he's ever purchased. And recommended it to salsa dancers.

used copies are cheap so ...

I agree completely. This is a top quality video. THANK YOU

Although the concept is great, it is ruined by amateurish filming & reproduction. Color changes for no reason, the camera focuses on the wrong things, the sound is tinny -- it is an embarrassment! The young dancers do well & may inspire others -- but the story is "told" sketchily, omitting most of the first act of the ballet.

It's an important historical documentary , but if you want to see old taps dancers like showed in the dvd cover, avoid it. There are only few short cuts from genius like Bill Robinson and others and many and many conversations and interviews. Try old videos in VHS or the outstanding afro-american dancers in 'Stormy Weather', a Fox musical from the fourties, available in Amazon.

Debra Maxwell teaches a small ballet class of grade-school children, one of whom is new to the class. She explains the terms and shows precisely how to move the arms and feet. The five basic positions are taught, as well as some barre work and center work. The video is, indeed, only a bare introduction, but it's a great joy for my 5 year old to use daily. I appreciate the teacher's attitude toward the children in the class, expecting good work, but still being supportive of their beginning efforts. Some brief segments of accomplished adult dancers are included.
