VHS : National Geographic's Mysteries Underground
By far the most outstanding caving documentary ever filmed. The photography is the best I've ever seen from any National Geo special. The pictures and colors of various caves and their formations are shot and seen in a spectacular beauty that has to be seen to be believed. The special explorations of Lechaguea Cave in New Mexico are outstanding. Te cave is not a show cave or a tourable cave for the general public. After witnessing the camera work and explorations into this unknown (less popular) cavern, I was estatic that one HUGE cavern system could have such beauty and abundance of formations. The depth in which the director/producers took into the extensiveness of filming and story telling of caves throughout the world is outstanding alone. From the beginning of caving to the research involed, ... Read More

VHS : National Geographic's White Wolf
I love NG nature documentaries, but not this one. The subject matter was fascinating, and I like to learn a lot about the subject.

However, I felt this one included too much long-distance photography, when they could have gotten more closeup footage, given that they were able to get so close. I think they spent more time sitting on a hill comparing notes with each other than exploring better camera angles.

I would have preferred less focus on the people, and more on the wolves. The photography wasn't up to NG standards.

VHS : National Geographic's Jewels of the Caribbean Sea
Jewels of the Caribbean is by far the best documentary I have seen on marine life. I am a marine biologist and have seen probably every show out there. The footage, narrations, music, etc. on this video are wonderful. The shot of the ray swimming in circles in front of the camera's light is amazing. I have watched this movie dozens of times and never get tired of watching it. I teach marine biology and make a point if having my students watch this video (and they don't even fall asleep!). I highly recommend this video to everyone.

VHS : National Geographic's Lost Kingdoms of the Maya
This video was reasonably interesting, especially in its discussion of the Classic Maya Cities of Copan and Dos Pilas. I was somewhat disappointed by the lack of diversity regarding sites covered. Copan is certainly one of the more important Maya cities and it deserved coverage, but what about Tikal, Palenque, Yaxchilan, and Bonampak, just to mention a few others. They also might have considered some coverage of some of the Epi-classic & Post-Classic cities, such as Uxmal, Chichen-Itza, and Tulum; as these sites are also favorite tourist destinations.
The video is also somewhat dated, as so many recent discoveries have since added volumes of knowledge about these amazing people. All in all, it is still a good video that does wet the appetite for more learning about the Maya.

VHS : National Geographic's Love Those Trains
This video is a must for train buffs! It has everything a train enthusiast wants in a video: solid information coupled with stunning footage of some of the most interesting train runs in the world, as well as clips from "the good old days" of railroading. The video provides a good historical perspective of railroading and the advent of steam engines, moving along briskly to bring the viewer up to modern times. Because it was produced in the early 80's, some of the material may be a little dated, but a true rail fan won't be bothered by this aspect. The video is produced in the classic informative and easy-to-watch style which is the hallmark of National Geographic Videos. If you love trains, you won't be disappointed.

VHS : National Geographic's America's Endangered Species: Don't Say Good-Bye
So says a noted professor in the beginning of this film, and the stories that follow bear witness to that fact. Several endangered species are documented here. There is the Black-footed Ferret, the Manatee, the Golden Trout, the Red Wolf of the Southeast, and several more.

This video begins with the story of two photographers, Susan Middleton and David Liittschwager, and their idea to photograph the endangered species of America. The plan was to have documentation if and when the species went extinct, and it became a vehicle for helping to save them. By putting a "face" on the species in question, people are better able to understand what is at stake, and what they risk losing.

In just a few hundred years the landscape of America has been changed from one of wilderness ... Read More

VHS : National Geographic's Giant Bears of Kodiak Island
THis is one of the best documentary videos about giant kodiak bears. I really love this film and I see this video pretty recently. This video really gets indiscussion about these great bears like their habitats and the food that they eat. Some of the good scenes where there are two titan in a mock battle in front of a large female bear. It would have been really awesome to see a polar bear and a kodiak bear wrestle. This video was great I am hoping to buy it someday in the near future.

This is a to predictable image of Africa. Why must Americans always treat AFrica like a giant zoo?

VHS : National Geographic's Amazon: Land of the Flooded Forest
This video is a good intro into the life of the Amazon. I enjoyed how it balances the strangeness appeal of different creatures in the jungle with the scientific rigour to explain the terrain and the different environments animals and plants face throughout the year (rainy flooded season, dry season, etc.)

I strongly recommend this video for someone planning to visit the Amazon for the first time, just to have an idea of what to expect and to better be able to understand the explanations guides may give during a trip.
