VHS : Private Life of Henry VIII
in the opening credits. She was a good, pious woman therefore, boring. We find wife # 2, Anne, about to lose her head. She was accused of adultry & incest. The charges were probably bogus. The real problem was that Henry was bored with her & had fallen in love with his mistress, Jane. No political treatise this. It may the first Henry VIII talkie. It was a big hit, made in England & launched Charles Laughton's career. Today 75 years later, it is really amusing. I can't imagine the Brits being so devoid of humor that this was supposed to be serious. Jane gives Henry a son & promptly dies for the effort. Next is another Anne, imported from Europe, at the urging of his court & obstensibly his subjects. He didn't care for her & they spent their wedding night playing cards. ... Read More

VHS : Le Plaisir
The screen is pitch black and we hear a voice..."I'm so happy to be talking in the dark as if I were beside you, and maybe I am." The speaker is Guy de Maupassant (voiced by Jean Marais), and Le Plaisir is three of his stories filmed by the great director Max Ophuls. The connecting thread? That pleasure, or even love, lies in how people intermingle their lives, with a shrug, assumptions, an apology, a thank you. Le Plaisir is not so much a sophisticated film of attraction and hope as it is a film of rueful wisdom. It's best to keep in mind while watching this movie that while life can be enjoyed, there are times when hope can disappear.

The three stories consist of, first, La Masque. We are in 19th Century Paris at the Palais de la Dance, where great, swirling balls are held. This ... Read More

Yes. Absolutely. You're busted by this film (you know whom you are) and you STILL will not admit it. Classic.

The-Powers-That-Be (or think that they "Be", incorrectly, I must add) in Hollywood should produce this movie in English.

There is a DEMAND for it. It would sell. Yep.

Yet the hypocritical, "tell-us-what-we-should-think" and "tell-us-what-we-should-do" people in Hollywood will never produce this in English.

Oh, no, they will not, for they are long-time admirers of socialism/communism. Fidel and Hugo Chavez are their heroes. Long live an economic system--socialism/communism--that has failed so often in history!!

Thankfully, not all of the actors and actresses in Hollywood are communists that fall down and worship Fidel or kiss Hugo's ... Read More

VHS : Art of Chinese Dance
This is a beautifully done video that brings viewers into the world of Chinese dance. Each dance is introduced and a brief explanation of style, technique and origin is given, in addition to the performance. Costumes and dancers are exquisite! Best of all techniques are described at the end of the video and and little (or big!) dancers in your household can attempt the moves that look so effortless on screen. It is a delight to have a video of this caliber on the art of Chinese dance available! My only wish...that this were longer and even more detailed. Still this is a fine introduction to the "Art of Chinese Dance."

Amazon is selling this product as a new original and genuine DVD, which is not. This is a frudulent DVD produced by a company that copies and sells pirated merchandise. I'm amazed that Amazon is selling this product. Not only the copy is illegal, but it's also incredibly bad. I haven't checked my card statement yet, but I hoped that they returned my money after I sent the DVD back. Shame on you Amazon!

VHS : Maya Lin - A Strong Clear Vision (Architect Documentary)
Ms. Lin is best know, to those of us in the DC area anyway, for the Vietnam War Memorial.

Those of us familiar with that landmark know that hers was one of many--over 1,400--proposals for the memorial. And she, a 21 year old Yale architecture student, won.

That memorial is the beginning of this film/DVD. In fact, I learned a little more about it. I didn't know, for example, that there was some adamant opposition to it. I did know that some Vietnam vets felt it lacked the symbolism on which they insisted. For that reason, the statue of the three troops was added after "The Wall" was completed.

The film also shows some of Ms. Linn's other designs, e.g., the Civil Rights Memorial in Montgomery, Alabama and the peace chapel at a college in Pennsylvania.

I appreciated the film ... Read More

Seduction Cinema is a small studio that specialize mainly in softcore lesbian porn parodies of popular films, such as Playmate of the Apes (a riff on Tim Burton's retelling of the sci-fi masterwork), Gladiator Eroticus (a spoof of Russel Crow's award-winning turn in Gladiator) and Erotic Survivor (a no-holds-barred rip on the popular TV show Survivor). Vampire Obsession represents a departure from that trend, and while its artistic ambitions make it both interesting and genre-defying, it's appeal will probably be limited.

First, let's drop pretention and call a duck a duck: Vampire Obsession is little more than an exercise in looking at atractive naked women in various compromising positions. There is no explicit action; in order to avoid an X rating, the sex is all simulated. There is little plot and less script, and ... Read More
