Many think that Sean Connery was the first actor to impersonate the role of the sophisticated British agent; when in fact he wasn't. Sean was the first actor to play bond in a "theatrical" movie. But in 1954, 8 years before Dr. No hit the screens, 007 was introduced for the first time on Television broadcast.

The movie was called Casino Royale, based on the first novel by Ian Fleming. The movie was adapted from this novel for a CBS broadcast, with the hopes of adapting more of Ian Fleming's novels on TV...but the broadcast was pretty much bashed by critics and ignored by viewers. The movie was broadcasted only once and lost. It was later found and re-broadcasted in the 1990's for TBS, part of a James Bond movie marathon. Thought the problem with that version that was re-aired ... Read More

It's hard to decide where to start describing this movie. A man tricked into becoming a soldier in the union army (Janssen) attempts to escape the prison camp he's in. The first time is a failure and so the movie begins. He does 30 days in "the box" and tells the jailer his time was up "three days ago". Janssen (Macho) does manage to escape on his next attempt. This man has had all he can take of what life has dished out to him. That's the only reason I can think of why he would kill a man (Carradine) over a bottle of champagne. Carradine and Jean Seberg had just been married. She witnesses his death from the second story of their honeymoon suite. The marshall of the town decides Macho acted in self defense but Seberg goes after him and offers a sizeable reward. The ending is sad ... Read More

Brosnan's third Bond movie, The world is Not Enough, is high on action but weak on plot. Robert Carlyle is a pretty good villain but his motivations seem a bit unclear. Sophie Marceu is also very good as the main Bond girl, while Denise Richards' performance is weak and she's completely miscast. Leonard Maltin wrote that the movie makes M (Judi Dench) seem foolish, and he's right. From the earlier movies, I took her to be a bright woman, but in this one she's unbelievably stupid, considering she's the head of an intelligence agency (no pun intended).

I wish they had done some more rewrites on the script and replaced Denise Richards. It's still an enjoyable movie, but not as good as it could have been.

I saw this movie when I was a kid of course and now that I teach US History was hoping that it might work in place of the ever popular Saving Private Ryan. The movie is all about the background of the boys, how they grew up, the relationship they had as brothers, their fighting spirit and how they tried to make sure they stayed together in the military (in this case the Navy) during the war. I have to be honest, since I was looking at this film for use in my class I was hoping for more story of them on the ship but that part takes all of about 10 minutes. But as far as good old movies go - this is a delight.

This was an impressive DVD showing rear and side views, starting with warm up, two persons showing front and rear views simultaneously, clearly and slowly taking one through this style of Tai Chi forms and adding gentle warm up exercises with group and solo efforts. This was so good I plan on getting more in the series.

I didn't think much of this set when I received it as a gift a few months ago -- but after having used it numerous times I can definitively say it's one of the best I've seen.
Precise yet not too detailed or uncustomizable instruction, and a healthy but not ridiculous pace -- this tape is suitable for everyone.

VHS : Taking of Beverly Hills / Movie
"The Taking of Beverly Hills" is an action-packed thrill ride of a movie! I know, because the very first time I saw it, it was sooooooo good that I just had to watch it again. And each time I watch "Beverly Hills", it gets better and better throughout. I had to give credit to Ken Wahl on the lead performance as a quarterback football player. To me, whenever I see this movie, it kind of asks me this question..."How can one man go through an entire night of running from the bad guys that are robbing the city of Beverly Hills as if this is some kind of real life-or-death football game all of a sudden?" Well, I don't have the answer to that one just yet. But anyway, to anyone on this website, DO NOT MISS THIS FILM!!!

VHS : Highlander - The Series, Vol. 2
The TV series Highlander hit full stride here.

When Highlander arrived on TV, it started out with a good concept (taken from the first film, primarily), a real hero (Duncan - played with great self-assurance by Adrian Paul), but some bumps in the road that gave it a TV feel. This is evident in the first season, as the episodes are hit and miss, and the show wasn't operating on all cylinders until near the end of the season.

In the 2nd year, Highlander hit full stride, and with each successive episode, the series became more compelling. Many episodes from that year are excellent. The full Highlander team had to have known they had a winner, and the creative energy is high. These were the shows that solidified the fan base the show would ultimately have.

The 3rd season picked up ... Read More
