BAMBI

Rick tries to kill himself with laxatives because nobody listens to him. The boys have a wacky adventure to the laundrette that ends in disappointment. Neil remembers that they've been chosen to represent Scumbag college at University Challenge. The rest of the episode is the absolute best of the entire series. Bambi's secret past comes out: "Bambi Goes Crazy Ape Bonkers with His Drill and Set". The posh kids challenging Scumbag are played exquisitely by Ben Elton, Hugh Laurie, Stephen Fry and Emma Thompson. Hard-core fiends agree that this one is best. It is right hard to disagree.

NASTY

Neil takes a bath in muck, wears one of Rick's frilly little girly dresses, and is nearly electrocuted. Vyv and Mike try to set up the video for their "all night ... Read More

VHS : The Young Ones : Oil/Boring/Flood
All the main characters are hilarious send-ups of types. Indeed, they are the farcical extreme of lots that were too common in Thatcher's England in the early '80's. The show also manages to use racial stereotypes for comic fodder. It really plays around with fear and the tenuous nature of identity. Well, Vyv and Mike are pretty solid--but Rick and Neil are soft little girlie blouses blowin' in the wind. There was no place for them back then. Unfortunately, they are all to prevelant in our own social climate. Thank you Margaret Thatcher! Of course, she's got nothing to do with the jellofication of our political system. Right?

OIL

This one is brilliant. Mike turns into Kim Jong II and forces the lads to mine the oil that Vyv has says is in the basement. The best part is Vyv ... Read More

VHS : The Young Ones - Demolition/Bomb/Sick
This is really the only non-animated show I've seen that plays precisely like a cartoon. It isn't just "wacky", it is gleefully sadistic. I love the violence and animosity each character expresses quite vividly towards one another and everyone else. On "Sick" on this tape, Madness performs "Our House" as a riot blossoms on the street around them. Gradually the band becomes involved until they too are fully enganged in an orgy of senseless violence.

The political aspect of the show remains relatively vague. Rick pretends to be an anarchist but he's a weeping ladies' blouse. Vyvyan has no political consciousness and just smashes everything because it is really fun to smash things. Mike is too cool for politics and Neil is a hippy.

"Demolition" is great for Vyv's unbridaled explosion ... Read More

VHS : The Young Ones - Cash/Interesting/Summer Holiday
Really violent slapstick has always worked best when there is absolutely no indication that the participants enjoy each other's company in the slightest . This show works as a sort of capsule of social darwinism--every man is out to serve his own best interests. That they all live together in the same dilapidated house is simply brilliant.

This is the ugliest program I've ever obsessed over. Honestly, these characters are refugees from a cartoon made by illustrators on really hard drugs.

CASH

This one is highlighted by antics of two headless aristocrats who lose their heads yet again and boogie about casa de Scumbag. Vyvyan turns cheeky scoring cups of sugar from his sexy, flatulent neighbor. Then he goes and gets himself knocked up. The boys are so broke that Neil becomes a fascist ... Read More
