VHS : Red Dwarf: Smeg Ups
If you like Red Dwarf, this tape is enjoyable but not as funny as the actual series. It consists mostly of out-takes of the cast flubbing their lines. The host, Kryten, is very funny, though. For die-hard fans only.

VHS : Red Dwarf - Smeg Outs
Robert Llewelyn (Kryten) hosts the second bloopers tape, containing bloopers from Seasons 1, 2, and 3 of Red Dwarf, with a few included from Season 4 and 5 later on. He divides the smegouts into animals, inanimate objects, and humanoids. On the first, he has a very funny comment: "we've had chickens that wouldn't fly, rabbits that wouldn't hop...thank heavens we never actually hired that constipated elephant." Actually, that would've been a laugh had one been hired.

Of the actors, Christopher Barry (Rimmer) mostly does fluffs and freezes. The first is basically getting his lines tingue-toed, I mean tongue-tied, saying "chitley" instead of "chutney" in "Thanks For The Memory." The second is when he says a line, then freezes when he forgets the following one. Or unexpected things ... Read More

VHS : Red Dwarf VI - Byte One: Gunmen Of The Apocalypse
I say that because following the Red Dwarf crew's tangle with the Despair Squid in "Back To Reality", the crew have lost what the Cat describes as the giant red trash can with no brakes and 3 million years on the clock, and have been chasing the ship's vapour trail. Result, the green Starbug becomes their chief craft and roving home. However, they encounter Psirens, temptresses who lure unwary space travelers onto asteroids and suck their brains out with a straw, "just like Odysseus and that Turkish legend... in some country where they wear curly shoes and humus."

The opening scene with Lister, whose hair makes Jerry Garcia look bald, and has to clip his toenails with a pencil sharpener, is a standout. Later, in his amnesiac state, he describes himself as "an animal, a tasteless, uncouth, ... Read More

VHS : Red Dwarf 6: Byte 2
Things and ideas are getting a bit strained in the last three episodes of the sixth season, and the first story in this video is evidence of that. "Emohawk-Polymorph II" has the members of the RD crew crashing down on the GELF (Genetically Engineered Life Form) planet of the Kinatowawi, a hideous-looking ape-like race halfway between man and orangutang. They need an oxygen-generation unit, which was damaged during the crash. The Kinatowawi have one, and fortunately, don't skin the RD crew for bean bags like many other GELF races do, but the price is Lister marrying the chief's daughter. They also encounter an Emohawk, which like the alien from the third story of Season 3, is a Polymorph, a creature that feeds off negative emotions. As a result, the story isn't a "Polymorph" retread, but it's not as great as the original. ... Read More

VHS : RED DWARF, Series III, Byte Two ~ 1989 Remastered Programs (Bodyswap / Timeslides / The Last Day)
More creative stories and interesting concepts abound in the second part of one of Red Dwarf's best seasons.

"Bodyswap" involves Lister having to undergo the title operation in order to impersonate Carole Brown, Red Dwarf's executive officer, who has clearance to override the auto-destruct system. that was caused by a malfunctioning Skutter (service robot) that rewires the entire ship into a booby trap, and which is triggered when Lister orders a milk shake and a Krispy bar. The Cat then says "Lucky you didn't order a double cheeseburger." The success of the operation leads to Rimmer borrowing Lister's body in order to make it trim, but as an excuse to give Rimmer the experience of having an actual physical body after 3,000,000 years. After all, because Lister doesn't exercise, smokes and drinks, he has "more gut ... Read More

VHS : Red Dwarf IV - Byte One: Camille
I am a huge fan of Red Dwarf and bought the entire set in one purchase after seeing a few random episodes on PBS. One of the episodes I saw on PBS was "Camille," and I thought it was the funniest thing I had ever seen at the time. Upon watching the rest of the episodes, I would have to say that this is actually one of the weaker tapes overall. That is not to say that it is not worth buying, though, because it certainly is.
"Camille" is basically the Dwarfers take on Casablanca, with fewer laughs than most episodes. The second episode is "DNA", in which the crew finds a device that can rewrite DNA to turn anything into anything else. They accidentally make a giant curry-monster. Pretty funny, but I never really got into the curry humor in Red Dwarf. The final episode is "Justice", in which the gang visits Justice World, ... Read More

VHS : RED DWARF, Series VII, Byte One ~ 1997 Programs (Tikka to Ride / Stoke Me A Clipper / Ouroboros)
The gap between Seasons VI and VII are due to the following: Red Dwarf co-creators Doug Naylor and Rob Grant severed their partnership, leaving the former to form other writing teams. Craig Charles (Lister) was falsely accused of [assault] in 1994 and sentenced to three months on remand. Log entry ends--review proper begins.

"Tikka To Ride": With Starbug's curry supplies wiped out, Lister manipulates Kryten by fitting him with a spare head, overriding said head's guilt chip and behaviour protocols, and leads the others on a curry hunt in the 22nd century using the time drive they got from "Out Of Time." They instead land on 22 November 1963, inside the Texas Depository Building, where by sheer accident, they turn a certain Lee Harvey Oswald into a giant pizza. Unfortunately, this means they have altered the timelines ... Read More

"Duct Soup": Kochanski is not adapting well to Starbug. Her room is next to the sewage processor, whose clapped out pipes squeak out the sounds I've put on the title on my review. She is close to breaking something, as she finds Lister's tennis shoes in the fridge and not cotton-cheese with pineapple chunks, and in a hilarious moment, Kryten tries to comfort the tear-stricken Kochanski by giving her... the Heimlich Maneuver!

Then the unthinkable happens. The generator overloads, goes out, and due to a safety precaution, the door to Lister's room locks everyone inside. They have twelve hours to avoid a meteor storm so they crawl through Starbug's service ducts, "two miles of ventways that wind through the ship like intestines."

We learn that Lister has claustrophobia, and Kochanski's attempt to take his mind off it yields ... Read More
