VHS : Complete Black Adder (8pc)
For anyone who knows anything about Rowan Atkinson and his cronies in comedy, Black Adder is a must have for your collection. By far, the best of the series is Hugh Laurie playing the idiotic Prince George and RA as his conniving butler. My husband loves that his favourite character in the series, Baldrick, appears in all episodes as Blackadder's hapless sidekick.

VHS : Black Adder Series 1 Part 1
Black Adder, one of the best britcoms ever, made four series, each a takeoff on costume dramas set in different eras of British history - the Wars of the Roses, the Elizabethan age, the Regency, and WWI. The final 3 years are almost uniformly superb. However, the first season, had a different writing team - Ben Curtis and star Rowan Atkinson instead of Curtis and Richard Elton - as well as a different director and cast from the subsequent shows. As a result, it's just not up to the level of the later series.

This season pretends to tell the true story of an imaginary dynasty between the Plantagenets and Tudors. The story starts with the battle of Bosworth Field, where Edmund Blackadder accidentally kills Richard III, subsequently becoming the younger, and by far the less respected ... Read More

VHS : Black Adder Series 1 Part 2
The first VHS in this series with the first three episodes on itis some of the funniest television I have ever seen: The Slimy Prince Edmund, the obsequeous Baldrick and the witless Lord Percy are great fun, the supporting cast are wonderful. The writing is very clever.

So what happened here? Did they accidentally burn their writers at the stake? Did they run out of time and decided to substitute frantic activity for plot? Did they just run out of ideas? It was a shame that they felt that they had to wrap it up like that.

I would have been much happier if I had never watched these three shows. The first one was a bit of a snooze except for the Infanta of Spain's interpreter. The last two didn't even have that grace.

I haven't seen any later ones although I do intend ... Read More

VHS : Black Adder Goes Forth Part 2
This is one of the best tapes of the Blackadder series. "Private Plane" and "General Hospital" are extremely funny, and both deal with Blackadder trying to escape the frontlines before the big push. He tries to join the air force in "Private Plane", and is promised a job away from the frontlines if he can catch a German spy in "General Hospital".

As others have said, "Goodbyee" is funny, but somber at the end. All the characters (except the general) end up on the front line, knowing they are going to die. Although Baldrick has another "cunning plan" to get Blackadder out by injuring himself on a splinter on a ladder, Blackader goes over the top with everyone else. The action goes into slow motion, as the soldiers rush towards the Germans. Although you never actually see them die, and you never ... Read More

We pulled these out again recently, and I don't remember enjoying them as much before. Previously season 2 had been my favorite, but seeing these again after a few years has increased my appreciation. Highly recommended, but I would still suggest that new Black Adder viewers start with season 2.

VHS : Black Adder V - Back and Forth
Watching this, I was embarrassed for the actors. It was like watching an aging rock band reunion when all the members had forgotten how to play. I've been a Black Adder fan since first seeing the show in the early nineties, and I'd hoped for some of the old Adder magic. After all, Corporal Punishment, from the Black Adder IV series, was one of the funniest half-hours ever produced for television.

Sadly, this waste of tape had very little of that, instead mostly relying on puerile toilet humor and superficial unfunny one-liners.

If they get the urge to do another reunion, I hope they have a lie down until the urge passes.
