As for the person who complained that Martin Scorcese called the '80's the "me" decade, that was a popular theme of the time. Maybe you should go back and look at 80's and the literature about it from all kind of sources. Just like the 20's was often refered to as the "Roaring" 20's. 80's was often called the "me" decade. I also think it is not a liberal or conservative designation. Following the internalization of values and desires in the 70's, the 80's was when technology, growth, income and development all led to the application of the 70's trend of an individual ethic. People DID become more selfish and self centered, more complacent, in need of more instant gratification.

VHS : Streetwise
Although this video was shot some time ago, by the famed photographer Mary Ellen Mark, the conditions are as applicable now as they were back when it was made some years ago. This video "Streetwise" portays the life of several street kids in Seattle: "Tiny", the prostitute, who can't be any more than about 13 or 14; "Rat" who goes dumpster-diving for food; and Roberta Josephine (Bobbie Jo) who was eventually strangled to death by Gary Ridgway, the "Green River Killer", active in Seattle at that time and responsible for the deaths of many runaways in the Seattle area.

The conditions under which these kids live and survive is appalling. "Rat" lives in an abandoned hotel, the windows boarded up, sleeping on an old mattress on the floor. It's chilling to think of a kid being there, ... Read More

VHS : Latcho Drom
Latcho Drom is mesmerizing, the people magical and the music unforgettable.

There is no dialogue, but this does nothing to detract from the film's integrity or entertainment value. Although Rom diaspora has resulted in the Roma living in just about every country on earth, Latcho Drom provides the viewer with a coup d'oeil of the Roma people in Africa, Egypt, Turkey, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, France and Spain.

The Romanian Roma (the two are mutually exclusive), instantly pulled me under their spell. Upon first impression, the Romanian "gypsies" might look like a ragtag band of amateurs. In short order, however, this misconception is swiftly dispelled as these musical maestros fill the air with their art - all deftly orchestrated and delivered.

VHS : Survivors of the Holocaust
This sad but powerful video is a must-have for any English or History teacher dealing with the Holocaust. I *do* agree with many Holocaust survivors who urge teachers to NOT begin their units with such a film, but to use it as a tool that complements a balanced discussion of this horrific time period. I begin my unit with a study of poems from the book, "I Never Saw Another Butterfly," recommended by another teacher, and then proceed to this video. Finally, we read the book, "Night," by Elie Wiesel. I feel all the first-hand accounts really hit home the reality of the time, as well as the need to be wary of recurrences in such hatred today.

VHS : Pyramid - Tours of the World's Greatest Structures
Another in the long line of animated adaptations of the coolest series of illustrated architectural books ever written, David Macaulay's collected works. This film shows how and why the great pyramids of the Nile Valley were constructed, and herein imagines the key figures of the era, while giving us a storyline (with murder, political intrigue, and the evil of human ambition) to add interest to an already fascinating subject. Although I personally prefer Cathedral, Castle, and Roman City a little more than Pyramid, I still like this video enough to have watched it about once a year going back into the '90's and wouldn't hesitate to urge anyone who thinks he might be interested to see this DVD for himself.

VHS : Mark Twain Tonight
Mark Twain Tonight is now a valued item in my personal library of classics. One of my professors at college was inspired to impersonate Mark Twain based on this performance. I would highly recommend this educational & entertaining dvd for anyone who wants more than Hollywood mindless entertainment.

VHS : The Last Days
Many Hungarian Jews perceived themselves as loyal and enthusiastic citizens of their chosen country. They took it for granted that their Christian neighbors were true friends and wished them no harm. This illusion was brutally shattered after the Nazi invasion. These Christians often took special delight in harassing Jews and handing them over to Hitler's thugs. What happened to God? Why did He allow such evil to exist? You will find the interviews with these survivors of the Holocaust riveting.

The Hungarian aspect of the Holocaust is most interesting, if for no other reason, but to show how committed the Nazis were to slaughtering Jews and others deemed racially inferior---even if it jeopardized their war efforts. Indeed, it appears that Jew killing was deemed of paramount importance. Nothing else ... Read More
