VHS : Jazz - A Film by Ken Burns
The greatest compliment to this series is that it has created a torrent of discussion and the debates are still raging. I enjoy this series so much, I watch it nearly every year.

My critique has been discussed at length, so I summarize this way:

I appreciate Wynton Marsalis' discussion of the jazz with which he is familiar. This does not qualify Wynton Marsalis to decide, for everyone else, what constitutes jazz when the question of "fusion" comes up.

Much of fusion, both then and now, is largely rhythm section dominated (elecrtic bass, drums, guitar and keys). Therefore, it may have been difficult for a Marsalis, a horn player, to appreciate.

Why refer to Marsalis and not Burns? Because nearly all of Burns' analysis depends upon the ... Read More

VHS : The Civil War - A Film by Ken Burns (Boxed Set)
Ken Burns' epic documentary about the Civil War is perhaps the greatest and most all-encompassing history lesson of the North/South conflict that has ever been put on film or page. Not only is every important detail of the war covered (and in such a way that the details are interesting and important, not boring), but two entire episodes are devoted to the build-up and aftermath of the conflict. Essentially, if you were teaching a class on the Civil War, this video is all you would need, as it both conveys the vital information of the war, and does so in a way that doesn't stagnate. In essence, a very tight, well-produced series.

The only reason I give this set four stars out of five, though, is that it lacks (althouht through no fault of its own) the emotional punch of Burns' more ... Read More

I originally purchased this for a friend who is also a teacher, however after seeing it, I decided I wanted one for my classroom as well! It is a great mix of animation and actual footage. My friend teaches in the primary grades and we both felt additional instruction and explanation might be necessary for that audience. I teach upper elementary and the DVD will support a basal reader selection quite nicely and without additional instruction. Highly recommend.

I always learn from A&E Biography and was not disappointed in this one. The DVD was way expensive so I bought this one. Malcom was one of the most interesting people and lived a good & full life until his tragic murder.

VHS : Underground Railroad (History Channel)
One of the most general perceptions that I received from my high school history days in the 1960's concerning the fate of black slaves in America was that they essentially passively waited for the Union armies to free them during the process of the Civil War in the 1860's. In short, blacks had no pre-history as a people who struggled for freedom in their own right but were merely the victims of history. Of course, since those days I have made it my business to find out the real story of slave resistance and although there are many parts that are lost to history we now know that as least some slaves in some situations found ways to break their bondage. Aided during the past few decades by serious scholarly research into the subject we have a more rounded view of the dynamics of slavery in ante bellum American society. ... Read More

VHS : Eyes on the Prize: The Time Has Come (1964-1966)
Eyes on the Prize is certainly on of the best television programs ever made. It is absolutely riveting to watch - something really rare for documentaries.

THE TIME HAS COME (1964-1966) is program 7 in the series - and one of the best episodes. It focuses on MALCOLM X, BLACK PANTHERS, and STOKELY CARMICHAEL.

In the South and in the urban North, leaders emerged who articulated the black communities' sense of urgency and anger. THese were voices who helped tranform the civil rights movement into a broader struggle for human rights, an dfor tru equality and economic jstice. These leaders called for different tactics, and their message was direct - "The Time Has Come."

The u rgency was best articulated by Malcolm X, then the National Minister of the Nation of Islam. His eloquence gave renewed voice ... Read More

VHS : Frederick Douglass: When The Lion Wrote History
A compelling 90-minute PBS biography tracing Douglass' struggles, ideas, and influences. This sophisicated chronicle examines debates within the abolitionist movement, Douglass' complicated relationship to Lincoln and the Republican party, and Douglass' personal life. A fascinating look at the radical politics of 19th century when blacks were slaves, women couldn't own property or vote, and angry mobs attacked abolitionist speakers for arguing that "all men are created equal."

VHS : Toni Morrison: Profile of a Writer
Using Ms. Morrison's experience of the actual writing of and the content of Beloved, this video captures a most amazing discussion of the degradation of slavery as told by the victims of the "peculiar institution."

Ms. Morrison explains and details the apparatus known as the bit and why it was used. This was one of the most oppressive of oppressive instruments used to restrain another human being. As she states,

"It should have destroyed the person so harnessed ... BUT! It did not!" They survived inspite of the attempted degradation of the human spirit.

From the mouth of an enslaved person, in reference to the cruelty of the enslavers, the question is asked: What are these people? You, tell me, Jesus! What are they?

Nothing had prepared me for this indepth discussion of the cruelty of slavery as ... Read More

I was in law enforcement during this period of time. This documentary seems to be very well done, factual and accurate in all matters.

I am very excited to witness how our nation will change (my hope is for the better) during the next four years under the leadership of Barack Obama.

However, it is my hope that our "President-Elect", Barack Obama will distance himself from all former Weathermen members, especially William (Bill) Ayers and his wife Bernardine Dohrn.

Respectfully,
R. Greenleaf - Utah
