VHS : A&E Biography - William Shakespeare: Life of Drama (1996)
I'm a High school drama teacher and while doing a lesson on Shakespeare I bought this video to teach the kids about Shakespeare's life. It has a lot of great information and it doesn't dumb it down (if you get what I mean). Its not just a biography of the events in Shakespeare's life, it looks at him as a man and explores how events in his life triggered his creative process. There is a lot of great commentary from well respected scholars and classical actors and directors. Great teaching tool for anyone trying to make Shakespeare cool.

I am a runner, so Steve Prefontaine is a hero to me. He was an awesome runner, and also did a lot for amateur athletics overall, affecting all generations after him. He died such a tragic, untimely death, but his legacy and inspiration live on. Great documentary of a great hero.

I always learn from A&E Biography and was not disappointed in this one. The DVD was way expensive so I bought this one. Malcom was one of the most interesting people and lived a good & full life until his tragic murder.

VHS : Doris Day: It's Magic
I have always been a huge Doris Day Fan and I own all 39/39 of her films. When I saw this Video for sale 2 years ago on this website I picked it up instantly. And I loved it. This A&E Biography was so beautiful and it got so into depth. This Biography really touched some of the same facts that the book Doris Day: Her Story by A.E.Hotchner touched. Doris had such a sad and a happy life. It was also fun to see clips from so many of her movies. It was so sad to me that she went through 4 bad marriages that poor woman. But she always stuck it out and kept happy. She is a woman to admire. No matter what the hardship she kept smiling. This is a great A&E Biography, of a great Woman.I highly suggest this film to everyone.

VHS : Biography - Benjamin Franklin: Citizen of the World
It seems that the more you know about Benjamin Franklin, the less you know about him. He was a brilliant man who somehow managed to be both simple and very complicated all at the same time. If I tried to list all of his accomplishments here, I would surpass the maximum word limit before I could even get my review started. At the birth of the new Republic, his was the face of America to Europe. I must admit, though, that I have never been all that enraptured with Franklin, despite all of his brilliance. He broke with the British Empire only after being excoriated by the Privy Council for his role in the "Hutchinson affair," he was not what you would call a humble man, he went years without seeing his wife (his first "short" trip to England lasted seven years, and he could have come home much ... VHS : Biography - Michelangelo
A&E does a fine job covering the important aspects of an unfathomable subject. There needs to be a piece on Michelangelo and a separate piece on his art. Such brilliance cannot be contained in one volume.

VHS : Biography - F. Scott Fitzgerald
F. Scott Fitzgerald defined a generation. His extravagant lifestyle and unsurpassed talent as a writer made him one of the twentieth centuries most intriguing figures. Yet underneath the glitzy persona lie a vulnerable man with a frail ego and a tendency toward self-destruction. A & E Biographies takes a candid look at this multi-faceted man in the well-researched video presentation of F. Scott Fitzgerald: The Great American Dreamer.

Beginning with a history on the roaring twenties, the prime time of Fitzgerald's life and work, this documentary span the era that influenced the man and gives a detailed account of the man who symbolized youth in a time of decadence. Fitzgerald's love of writing, love of liquor, and tumultuous marriage to his beautiful wife Zelda are all thoroughly ... Read More

VHS : A&E Biography - Charles Dickens: A Tale of Ambition and Genius
I acquired this video to interest my students in Dickens as I was about to assign reading. BIG MISTAKE. This video, while informative (hence the 2 stars), is dry an an old stick. If you use it, use it in small doses--interject your own anecdotes between small stretches of the video. That'll teach me not to preview a tape before I show it.

VHS : Biography - John Wayne: American Legend
Well, I just saw this on DVD so I'm not sure why it is described as VHS tape only but the DVD definitely exists. Overall, I thought it a solid documentary of the Duke. All of his character traits are discussed and elucidated which allows us to separate the man from the gigantic legend which has been constructed around him. Most pleasing is that Wayne never took himself too seriously as evidenced by his appearance at Harvard and the making of True Grit. His range as an actor has totally been underappreciated. Ron Howard points out that no leading man in Hollywood today would have taken his role in The Searchers as it's far too complex and nuance filled for our modern times, but not for John Wayne. He had his own times. John Wayne was and is an American legend, and, although it's a cliché, I wish we had more ... Read More
