VHS : Reader's Digest Scenic Wonders of America - Box Set
These videos were very well photographed. Aside from the narration occasionally turning to the cheesy side by iterating quotes with fake accents, this is a great collection to see some of the natural beauty that America has to offer. Makes you want to run out and visit these places and find more of what's out there.
If your not interested in scenic beauty, then this collection probably isn't for you.

VHS : The Castro [Neighborhoods; The Hidden Cities of San Francisco]
From Back Cover:

"A Neighborhood, a Battleground, a mecca."

"Now known internationally as the world's first 'gay hometown,' San Francisco's Castro district was a quiet working-class neighborhood of European immigrants only a few decades ago.

In this moving documentary, filled with rare archival film and fresh contemporary footage, the story of the Castro's transformation is told by those who lived it, young and old, straight and gay. It's a tale of social upheaval, exuberant street culture, political assassination, and the inspiring coming-of-age of an entire community -- an ongoing saga even today."

This was not at all what I expected. There there was no "flow" or order to the "tour". When towns were mentioned, you had to have a map available becasue the video did not show the location clearly and it jumped from east to west. The "feeling" of/for Ireland was nil. The videos of the areas did not make you want to visit Ireland. Terrible! I would never have ordered this video if I had seen it first. Matter of fact, I turned it off before the end.

Fantastic cast (JOHN SAXON, BASIL RATHBONE, JUDI MEREDITH, and DENNIS HOPPER.) This formula program uses a standard threat that you have seen from the old 50's sci-fi and even pops up now and then today. Check out the 1990 technology such as a reel-to-reel tape recorder of which many of today's viewers have never seen. If you only had $50,000 to make a movie you would bring your home tape recorder also.

In the year 1990 a technically advanced society has crash-landed on Mars just prior to our plans to go there. We sped up the process to see if we could help the survivors. I will not go into details however at one point the female alien (Florence Marly) looks up and find the female astronaut owns three male food containers and she is green with envy. What great threat can this ... Read More

VHS : Great Cities of the Ancient World - Athens & Ancient Greece
This is a good video, very informative. It compares favorably with, for instance, National Geographic and Reader's Digest videos. The computer recreates of the ancient structures are good. When superimposed on the modern grounds, you can see it's artificial because the lighting is wrong. It would be nice if all ancient structures that can be restored and rebuilt are done so.
The video should have included the modern lighting of the olympic flame ceremony.
The video could have had normal color footage, instead of that faded black and white footage for the ancient everyday scenes.
At the end of the other video about Egypt, it says that there is a lot known, and unknown, about ancient Egypt. It would also apply to ancient Greece (and so on).
This series of 3 should also ... Read More

VHS : America's Scenic Rail Journeys: Adirondack
One of the most beautiful passenger routes in North America is Amtrak's Adirondack between New York City NY and Montréal, Quebec. The line follows a north-south alignment through eastern New York state, following the Hudson Valley, penetrating the Adirondack Mountains, and skirting the west edge of Lake Champlain. This show, narrated by actor James Coburn, begins with a montage of film scenes followed by the series' introduction featuring computer- animated train. A map is used to trace the route of the train. In addition to typical lineside and on-board views, there are some nice aerial shots.

The journey begins at Penn Station in New York City with views of the lobby and office. Amtrak conductor Rick Palmer talks about his job, greets passengers (some of whom he knows personally) ... Read More
