1.Winning Softball starring: Michael Bolton, Dave Carroll
December 07, 1993
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

VHS : Winning Softball
This movie is one of the funniest things I've ever seen. At first I could not believe that it even existed. But after the initial shock setting in this movie grew more hiarious by the minute. Except for some very pretentious and cheesy moments where they get away from the softball the movie is brilliant. Michael Bolton and his "Bombers" teach us how to pitch and hit and if that bores you, there's always the occasional shot of Bolton's chest hair poking out of his jersey. And we can't forget Michael's ponytail hanging out the back of his hat or the 80's graphics between scenes for just an extra touch of comedy.
See it if you an find it.

VHS : Increasing Speed: Troubleshooting Tips and Drills for Increasing Pitching Velocity
Off The Bookshelf's Price: $19.95

Used Price: $4.95

A solid instructional video in Parker fashion, but if you have his basic and/or troubleshooting tapes, this one covers the same stuff. The only new discussion was regarding weighted balls.

This tape contains the same distance pitching drill, rubber band around your waist drill, walking drill, wrist snap drill, etc. that his previous tapes cover. He does discuss the necessity to continue working on your fastball after you start to develop your other pitches so you don't lose speed.

As far as the weighted ball information, if you buy a set of balls, they all come with instructions.

VHS : Art of Hitting Slow-Pitch Softball
This video is produced by people who really understand the art of teaching. They systematically breakdown the parts of hitting and present them in a logical order. They also explain the "why" behind most of the steps. As an example, they explained that moving your hands back (relative to your body) as you step forward is done in order to coil your abdominal muscles like a loaded spring. This extra understanding can make practice efforts far more productive than blindly mimicking some prescribed motion. The main area where the video could use improvement is instruction on dealing with ackward pitchs. The video does a pretty good job with the very low in the strike zone pitch. For the very high in the strike zone pitch, the video does say to use the tomahawk, but it doesn't explain ... Read More

This video makes some good points and covers the fundamentals. It's good for a beginner, but someone who has played for a long time and is looking to fine tune the swing should probably look elsewhere. Also, don't buy "The Championship Softball Hitting System" if you buy "The Art of Hitting Slow Pitch Softball", they are the EXACT same video, but "Art" has 15 extra minutes, so this is the one to get between the two. Don't waste your money on both, like I did.

No, I can't claim to have viewed all of the many hitting videos that have flooded the market in recent years, but I've seen a bunch, and in my experience this is the best one out there for very young ball players. There is actually an attempt to create a "story line" here involving a 12-year-old, a single mom, and an ex-ballplayer who happens by fortuitiously one sunny day in Central Park. The rest of the video involves instruction and drills. The key here, however, is that the approach taken by Bobby Woods (the ex-ballplayer) and his instructions/advice are really excellent, well-chosen, and to the point.

I've been involved with very young hitters for a few years now as a Little League "assistant dad," and although I certainly know a good batter's swing from a poor one, I know how ... Read More
