VHS : Gleaming the Cube
I saw this movie, on opening day, in Tucson, Arizona. I remember it like yesterday. I was skating with my best friends, outside the theatre, and I broke my board, doing a trick. I was heartbroken and the movie cured me but it made me want to skate even more... What a great time to grow up! A fantastic movie and an instant classic for my generation.

VHS : Dogtown & Z-Boys
"Dogtown and Z-Boys" is a documentary on the Z-Boys of Venice, California from the tough Dogtown neighborhood.

The Z-Boys aka the Zephyr team literally revolutionized skateboarding with an aggressive in-your-face style that shredded the competition.

Growing up in the 1970's, the documentary is blessed with old school footage (that is great quality compared to many surfing films that came out in the early 90's) that I just kept repeating... "sick".

The documentary shows the kids skating as well as a few classic clips of other competitors of skateboarding in the 50's and 60's and how the Z-Boys just came in and shattered the image of what skateboarding was all about with their freestyle surfing way on a skateboard.

Evils of the Night (Mardi Rustam, 1985)

This is another one of those movies where you find yourself asking "how on Earth did the people who made this movie talk these actors into doing this?" Not because the movie is inherently bad--it is, but producers, directors, and casting agents talk marginal actors into doing bad movies all the time--but because the quality of the actors, as a ratio to the quality of the film, is stunning.

A group of aliens (in what looks like a Toyota Corolla without wheels) come to earth and take over a hospital on an island known for summer-break partying. They need platelets from young humans in order to elongate their own lifespans. To this end, the aliens, headed by Drs. Kozmar (John Carradine) and Zarma (Julie Newmar), recruit two local mechanics, ... Read More

10.Stoked: Rise & Fall of Gator starring: Mark 'Gator' Rogowski, Stacy Peralta, Tony Hawk, Jason Jessee, John Brinton Hogan

VHS : Stoked: Rise & Fall of Gator
As a friend of Mark, I was very skeptical that anyone could tell his story. But I was impressed that the movie portrays Gator as a real person, and not just a celebrity gone bad. It captures the energy and culture of skateboarding in the 1980s, and follows Gator's life from his childhood until his incarceration for murder in 1991. It makes no assumptions or judgments, and tells the story through friends, family, and an interview with Gator while in prison.

It's a must see if you're a skateboard fan, but you'll appreciate the power of the story even if you know nothing about skateboarding.
