VHS : Shadowlands (1993)
This movie is beautiful and has lovely acting and gorgeous sets and even terrific writing.

The directing, as usual with Attenborough, is first-rate.

But Lewis is an infuriating person.

That's partly the movie's subject: Lewis is SO repressed, SO insulated, SO narcissistic, that it takes a very aggressive woman and a tragedy to (partly) penetrate his shell.

He wrote a book called "Surprised by Joy." This is a reference to Wordsworth; but it seems perfectly apt--and horrifying.

You get the sense from this movie that Lewis was so cut off from the emotions that anything--even pain--was better than the numbness in which he spent most of his life.

It's sad, and it's pointless.

Oddly--or perhaps not oddly at ... Read More

VHS : Baseball - A Film by Ken Burns
This volume contains a lot that is very good. Its structure is a bit forced (nine innings, or periods, of baseball history). The 9th inning, as others have noted, covers a large time frame compared with earlier "innings." I'm not sure that the decade is the best way of organizing baseball history, either. Still and all, that's more a matter of taste than anything else.

The book's authors candidly observe that they will focus on eastern teams, e.g., Boston Red Sox and Brooklyn Dodgers, "because we felt their stories especially rich in the human drama that accompanies the history of every team." However, I agree with a reviewer (who bears the name of one of Detroit's best first basemen ever) who laments that this really does slight the deep baseball history that covers much more territory ... There are so many scenes in this movie that are hysterical, including the scene where Patrick Dempsey's character gets busted by the dean of his school because his brother hung him out to dry, but the scene where the three brothers are arguing over the lyrics to Louie-Louie is one of a kind. Anyone who loves this movie (and it's absolutely one of my all time favorites) will get a grin by this one word...."wang on". Just the perfect family movie. Without being all gooey and sweet.

I have three Susan Powter work out tapes that I really enjoy. I love her enthusiasum and high energy. She encourages everyone to modify and build thier own strength at their own pace. She reminds me to breath, suck my stomach in whether I feel it or not! I have fit back into my summer close by just firming up through her work outs. Two of my sisters also report they have lost inches by doing the Susan Powter workouts. Thank you Susan!!! Glad to see you have made a come back, and are looking GREAT as ever.

I watched it for the second time in my life last night after what I think is 13 years (I'm 18 now), and I'm reminded why I loved this movie so much. Not only are the animations and music great, but the underlying lessons that are taught about trustworthy friendship and the tribulations that life gives us. The world we live in today is constantly telling us that we need to network and make contacts in order to insure ourselves in job security, financial security, or even emotional security. Friendship is meant so that we form bonds that last lifetimes. I've relearned a valuable lesson from this movie. I would also like to recommend my most favority Disney classic, The Jungle Book. This movie also has the same underlying message of the strength of friendship with one of everyone having their own place in the "jungle". I hope ... Read More

This movie is great viewing.Just the ticket for people trapped in a mundane existence. It starts out in seedy Vera Cruz sailors bars and takes you on a wild ride with desperate characters in a romp through beautifully shot southern Mexico. One of those great adventures in a foreign land movies.A boozy, brawling, sexy, and somewhat vulgar movie, and very entertaining!
