VHS : Sanshiro Sugata (AKA Judo Saga)
Martial arts films have come a long way since this curious historical drama, the first feature film directed by the up-and-coming Akira Kurosawa. Filmed and edited during wartime, it dramatizes the story of the late 19th Century development of judo as a breakaway form of the jiu-jitsu school of martial arts. Without the benefit of Hong Kong style wire-works or the flashy acrobatics of Bruce Lee, et al, the combat looks mostly like wrestling or sumo... Which, perhaps, back in the 1880s, it was. Takashi Shimura introduces his role as an older wise man, in custody over the spiritual growth of a younger firebrand; the plot has a bit of a Romeo and Juliet tone to it, as the young champion of judo falls in love with the daughter of a rival school's sensei. Fans who have seen Kurosawa's glorious ... Read More

VHS : Uchinadi - The Original Karate of Okinawa 1 (Tsunami)
Note: This review applies to the PAL version of this video.
The video quality is very good and the photography and editing are excellent as usual from Tsunami. The usual Tsunami-Sells "pictoric" introduction is quite relevant and envelops the video nicely. However I personally think the "classical" music doesn't quite "fit" the contents of the video.

When I begun Karate my Sensei once said: "There are no fancy secret techniques in Karate: just hard work! The techniques you practice now are the same as those of the great masters: only they perform them closer to perfection.".
The karate techniques analized in the first half of the video are basic "tsuki" and "uke" which are the very base of every karate curriculum. Toshihiro Oshiro Sensei reveals small but decisive technical details ... Read More

VHS : Kung Fu Hustle (Dubbed in English)
This wonderful comedy in Blu-ray features bad English dubing with poor voices, and they actually had the nerve to change many funny lines to dumb it down for us. It's best to watch it in Cantonese with English subtitles, it's then pure genius. I only wish Charlie were here to see it.

This was an impressive DVD showing rear and side views, starting with warm up, two persons showing front and rear views simultaneously, clearly and slowly taking one through this style of Tai Chi forms and adding gentle warm up exercises with group and solo efforts. This was so good I plan on getting more in the series.

I didn't think much of this set when I received it as a gift a few months ago -- but after having used it numerous times I can definitively say it's one of the best I've seen.
Precise yet not too detailed or uncustomizable instruction, and a healthy but not ridiculous pace -- this tape is suitable for everyone.

The whole event is about the buildup to Ortiz vs. Shamrock. It's an exciting event and everyone knows throughout the preliminary and undercard bouts that they are going to be witnessing something special a little later on in the evening.

The first bout is between Ron Waterman and Tim Lacjik. Both of these fighters are coming off of losses in the UFC - so both men felt the need to make a statement in this outing. After a slow 1st round, Waterman seems to gas out in the 2nd, allowing Lacjik to sway the lead to his favor. The 3rd is a boring round, with Waterman lying on top of Lacjik for most of the round. This fight goes to a decision. A low-blow in the first ends up playing a large part in the outcome.

This UFC event consisted of middleweight and heavyweight tournaments, plus a Super Fight main event. We see the UFC debut of fighters Mark "The Smashing Machine" Kerr and Kevin Jackson who would take part in the tournament at their respective weights.

The first fight is between Yuri Vaulin and Joe Moreira. This fight is not much more than a stalemate. Moreira gets Vaulin to the ground and rides the round out, without much action. The fight goes to overtime, where we see the same result. This very dull bout goes to a decision.

Next, Todd Butler faces Kevin Jackson, a highly decorated wrestler. Fans of the UFC are excited to see Jackson try his hand at mixed martial arts - and the time had come. This fight doesn't last long. ... Read More
