VHS : Walt Disney's True Life Adventures - The Living Desert
As a youth, I remember watching "The Wonderful World of Disney" (which, if I'm not mistaken, was later renamed "The Wonderful World of Color"). It was on every Sunday night and would feature cartoons, a serial program like "Davie Crocket: King of the Wild Frontier", or any variety of other Disney-worthy productions including a number of nature programs. I believe it was on that TV show that I first saw "The Living Desert". It won an Academy Award for Best Feature-Length Documentary in 1953.

The photography is the key and the producers wanted us to understand that right from the beginning. The introductary comments mention that the film is the result of hundreds of hours of patient work by wildlife photographers. The ensuing glimpses of wildlife in the desert is fascinating. ... I have bought/studies different methods of Natural horsemanship, from Clinton Anderson, Parelli, John Lyons.... I really liked his simplicity and getting to the most important aspect of enjoying our horses and loving them. I have 3 colts and have done all the exersises to a point where they are programed but lost the real communication that you have when your a kid and are not embarressed to show your feelings and connect as if you were a horse communicating. I grew up around horses as a kid and as an adult (38 yo) we seem to loose that intuition. My hat off to Monty at humbling himself, as other cowboys would never love on their horse like that. In public non the less. My horses have been much more conected with me now and I truly enjoy them and our parnership. Unlike the Slave relationship that horses ... Read More

I usually love to show Eyewitness DVDs for my science classes. The kids enjoy them and they usually remain engaged. This video, however, did not keep my students interested for longer then 10 min. The graphics are very outdated and some of the information seemed pointless (comparision of dinos to building machinery). I realize they cannot have live shots, but the claymation was obviously far older then the dvd production. A few CGI scenes would have helped immensely.

my 15 month old son is absolutely entranced with the show and with this video. He brings it to me and asks for it without words as often as he can find the case--and I enjoy it too! It's enjoyable, doesn't talk down and is very informative! A family favorite!

If you are interested in learning about orangutans, there are a LOT better choices out there. The film is about Julia Roberts's month-long experience with orangutans, as seen by Julia Roberts, who left the comfortable surroundings normally enjoyed by Julia Roberts. Do we really need the montage of Julia leaving NYC, with multiple art-school close-ups/silhouettes? Or so much focus on her Hepburnesque boat making its way up the river?

Still, orangutans being what they are, there is footage to commend this effort. Seeing the orangutan empty a flooded canoe to make its way across the river and help scrub clothes is genuinely touching. The closing scene is a piece of real life that is understandably upsetting to Ms. Roberts, who manages a short debriefing of the moment, but is clearly, as she puts ... Read More

6.Alone in the Wilderness from: Bob Swerer Productions

VHS : Alone in the Wilderness
This film is technically excellent, but there is an old timey "feel" to it, reminding me of "educational" films (narrated by the incomparable Alexander Scorby) I saw as a boy sitting in darkened grade-school classrooms, while other kids passed notes and whispered and giggled.

The narrator of Alone in the Wilderness, Bob Swerer, is also incomparable, and for me makes the film more than the sum of its parts. Swerer's hauntingly intimate and intelligently hokey voice is in the first person, the script taken from the journals of Dick Proenneke. Once you hear Swerer's voice you can't get it out of your head.

"Survivalists" would be more interested in the hunting, fishing, and canoeing aspects of Proenneke's 24 year adventure, and the lake itself looms large, but the film is most profoundly ... Read More

Purchased video to use as supplement for History Of Medicine class (4th grade). Was unhappy with the way things of a "mystical" nature were included in the material. I don't understand how the Producers could justify including information on Tarot Cards in the video. After all, we were looking for information on Skeleton's, not an introduction into foretunetelling. Also,I didn't care for the many references to man's "evolutionary" process from beast to man. Again, wasn't looking for a intro. into the Theory of Evolution.

The material that did foucs on the Skeletal System was good, but cluttered with a great deal of unecessary tid bits that took away from the video itself. I ended up turning off the video about 5-7 mintues from the end.

Zoboomafoo is entertaining, funny, and packed with information about animals. The Kratt brothers combine just the right amount of silly antics with real educational material and close-up encounters with all kinds of animals. See also my review of Zoboomafoo - Look Who's Home. This is quality educational programming that won't drive Mom or Dad crazy -- highly recommended.

This amusingly narrated movie about the life of a troop of chimpanzees is one of my favorite movies of all time. You can watch this over and over again. While I'm sure this production is guilty of a touch of anthropomorphization, it's nonetheless a good buy. I'm here writing this review because I want this on DVD. This is one of my favorite movie purchases of all time.

If you're sick of handing money to the Hollywood machine for more Ben Affleck movies, buy this quality entertainment.

I bought this video for my two-year-old, who loves elephants. And he does love this video, but doesn't like to watch it alone. First, there are a couple of graphic shots of dead elephants. Then, there are some dramatic sound effects and intimidating angles of elephants' feet coming down. Also, one shot shows a man (in a studio), aiming a rifle at an elephant, and shooting. The elephant disappears, so we don't see the animal dying. Still, our son has focussed on that, talking about people shooting elephants. The bottom line is, it's an excellent video for older children, but I don't recommend it for the very, very young.
