1.Stepping Out starring: Liza Minelli, Jane Krakowski, Bill Irwin, Ellen Greene, Sheila McCarthy
directed by: Lewis Gilbert (II)
January 01, 1998
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

VHS : Stepping Out
Liza Minelli is such a brilliantly expressive actor and dancer, that she can overcome any tired cliche that's thrown at her (starting with the title of this film), and this one has cliches that weren't even cliches in 1991. She's so great in every scene that the viewer forgets that the talents of Andrea Martin, for example, are wasted. Wasted. Shelley Winters gets a slightly better chance to show her skills, as the wizened, retired theatre exponent who nonetheless plays piano part-time for the troupe, almost *defiantly* lousy. (But at the big show, there she is in the orchestra pit!).
Yes, men are beasts throughout this early-era militant feminist flick. The only non-beast is the solitary xy-entity in the class, a sissified straight guy, badly acted and terrifically danced by Bill Irwin. ... Read More

VHS : Ballet Workout
I've done this tape/dvd about 120x from 1999-2006 -- only because there wasn't anything better at the time. It's what you'd call an 'old stand-by'. Nothing outstanding to recommend itself by todays standards in production or intellectual 'snap', but not the worst thing you will ever own as far as a ballet dvd goes.

It's stand-out points include: an overcrowded class, ancient hyper-extended stretches, ugly costumes, an akward piano score, uninspiring stressful undertones, and a forced and failed attempt at grace - but all that said, it IS a ballet class! There is no getting away from that. It might be a ballet class from 1981, and you'd probably assume there'd be some redeeming nostalgia about that, but, no, it must have been a bad filming day.

Back when I used to first ... Read More

VHS : Angelina Ballerina - The Magic of Dance
I really like Angelina Ballerina. My dream is to become a prima ballerina, just likeAngelina. In Angelina and Grandma, Angelina was really excited about wearing a tutu worn by Miss Lilly when she was young. And she accidently rips it. Grandma blames Angelina for leaving the birthday cake out in the rain by mistake. In William the Conjoror, William thinks he's really made Angelina disappear. Henry was sad that he'd never see his cousin again. In Miss Lilly Comes to Dinner, Angelina tried very hard to make her dinner like the Moussky Restraunt. But things got from bad to worse when Angelina tried to impress Miss Lilly. But Miss Lilly thinks Angelina's spoiled nothing. In Angelina's Valentine, Angelina thinks her Valentine ... Read More

REVIEW OF "BASIC MOVES" PORTION...
This is a half hour dance *instruction* video. Some moves may tire out your shoulders and hips, but it isn't much of a "workout," and definitely not cardio or strenuous.

~10min of head/neck & shoulder/arm movements .
~10min of rib/hip movements. ~5min of basic steps.
~5min of floor moves (Cleopatra/outer thigh lift, cat, leg stretch)

They introduce individual isolated moves, and repeat them several times for users to practice; most moves were easy to pick up (but will take time & practice to make it look graceful). I don't know if it's the instructors or if it's because they are demonstrated isolated motions, but they look a bit robotic/jerky. This seems is an Intro to belly dance for total beginners.

This tape will make you SWEAT! My old body (40+) did not like some of the moves and I had to skip them but it is still an excellent work out and it is fun as well. Dancing is definitely more fun then just 'exercising'!

I purchased this DVD because that I already own the VHS, and I've almost worn it out! The sets and camera "tricks" are only so-so, but the choreography is a challenge for the upper-elementary aged kids. I use "La Bamba" every year for Cinco de Mayo, and the kids don't want to leave class. Also, I've used both "Locomotion" and "Everybody Dance Now" in program presentations, complete with lighting effects. Dance steps are shown in a manner easy to follow and learn, and the kids love the "cool" music. Just keep in mind that the difficulty level makes it geared for fourth grade and above.
