VHS : Aladdin
Sure, there are the classics like CINDERELLA and SLEEPING BEAUTY. There are Pixar marvels like WALL-E and FINDING NEMO (which I adore). But for me, the real golden age of Disney came during the time when Alan Menken made animated musicals. POCHAHONTAS, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, THE LITTLE MERMAID, and ALADDIN are some. These are the real Disney classics.

I recieved this as an unexpected Christmas present several years ago, and was pleasantly surprised. I watched the film and the special features. They impressed me beyond compare. Besides the glorious film itself, the special features are some of the very best I've seen, and that's saying a lot. THREE WISHES, the comprehensive making-of documentary, is a joy to watch. The cartoon of the Genie's round-the-world vacation is short ... Read More

Sleeping Beauty was a childhood favorite of mine and still is! I just love this fairytale classic. I used to watch this film over and over again, I wore out my VHS copy many years ago and can't wait for this to be released in the fall. I highly recommend this gorgeous fable, enjoy future and past generations!!

VHS : Howard the Duck
Howard the Duck must be one of the best movies I ever saw while I was growing up. When I found out how horrible the movie did box-office wise, I thought, Okay, what went wrong? The movie takes home 4 razzies including worst picture of 1986 and George Lucas disowns the picture afterwards. Pixar Animation was founded because of this movie. That should account for something (check out IMDB.com for that). As for the DVD, on dvdverdict.com somebody interviewed director Willard Huyck and writer Gloria Katz and they were surprised when the movie wasn't available on DVD yet. Willard said they may have to talk to George Lucas to get the movie available on Region 1. If Universal ever puts it out on DVD I hope that Howard the Duck gets the special edition treatment it deserves in widescreen no doubt. Until ... Read More

VHS : Monsters, Inc.
"Monsters,Inc" is one of PIXAR's cleverest creations. It's about the Cyclopean Mike (Billy Crystal) and the shaggy Sully (John Goodman) whose career is to make children scream, keeping Monsteropolis powered. They collect children's screams. However, their city is having an "energy crisis" since children aren't as easily scared. Sully has been employee of the month--but the jealous salamander Randall (Steve Buscemi) will do anything to get ahead. Then,a little girl named Boo scares Monsterpolis... On the way, Sully develops paternal feelings for Boo,and it's learned that the monsters fear children.

"Monsters,Inc" has plenty of in-jokes--from the Harryhausen's sushi bar to an opening like "The Right Stuff." It's a clever, poignant movie. Mike is delightfully neurotic, thinking up that he'll ... Read More

VHS : The X-Files (Movie)
My family has recently become huge fans of the X-files TV show (thanks to reruns on the Sci Fi channel), so we were excited to see that they had actually released a movie back in the late 90's. I read several of the bad reviews that this movie received, but we really liked it when we first watched it. True, it's a little different from the TV series in that it was hard for them to try & fit in all of the usual cast members, but overall, we were really surprised at just how much we liked this movie. It was very suspenseful & it kept us rivited to the very end. Can't wait to see the new 2008 movie version as well!

+ AS A BATMAN STORY
It's simply the worst I've experienced. I've read bad Batman comics, I've seen bad Batman television episodes, but this goes above and beyond that. We have nothing to establish Bruce Wayne as a character, nothing to flesh him out beyond "rich guy, wears Batsuit." While this is essentially a Batman/Joker story operating around the theme "the enemies that made each other," even that works as nothing but a cheap twist. Neither of the characters are fleshed out, making them shells of the iconic characters we've read and watched. While I like when film makers take liberties from the source material, giving the Joker the role that they give him in this movie (in relation to Bruce's past) is ridiculous and, again, is simply a cheap twist that has absolutely no emotional resonance. The ... Read More

Maybe that's because it's a movie for little kids you twit.

I didn't intend to review this but I see all these jack*ffs slamming a children's cartoon and I just had to say something.

"What do you get when you mix TH White and Disney and BLAH BLAH DIDDLEY BLEH!"

Oh you witty rascal you.

Shut up. Just shut up.

VHS : Toy Story 2
Toy Story is the movie that pioneered the CG animation phenomenon and has become a classic, worthy of everyone's collection, not just those with children. Although the sequel was a much better film, you can't deny that without Toy Story, many other films would never have been made. Pixar proved it could be done and they continue to impress.

Toy Story 2, in my opinion a much better film than the original, deserved its Golden Globe win. It is cemented as one of the greatest animated films of all time. The best movies are those that can be viewed again and again and never get old. This is truly one of them.

VHS : Yellow Submarine
Next to "A Hard Day's Night", this is my favorite Beatle movie. I thoroughly enjoyed Yellow Submarine when it came out in 1968. I purchased a VHS copy when it first came out in an affordable edition. I wanted to upgrade my tape to DVD. But, c'mon fellas, $25 for a 40-year-old animated film by Peter Max?

This DVD better come with blotter acid & a Nehru jacket from Carnaby street! Oh, and if I have my choice of surviving Beatle to deliver the disc, send Ringo! He knows "It don't come easy"!

Though this movie is great for an hour and forty five minutes of entertainment its accuracy is something from another planet. If your looking to educate your children about the gods this isn't the right movie. However, if you want a little play-off on the gods and goddesses this is perfect. Its packed with humor and adventure, perfect for any ages. If you want some fun stories to read to your child I would recomend the D'AULAIRES book of greek myths.
