Excellent performance by all the actors and opera singers. It was a very good idea to transport the classic opera into a movies version. This adaptation is not new, nevertheless, is a masterpiece for all times. Congratulations !

I bought this movie for my grandparents. I have never seen it but having it arrive in the mail to them after they searched and searched for it locally; made my grandpa cry.

Domingo sings beautifully, Stratas less so but looks and acts the part. The biggest problem is there are so many cuts and shortened arias that you could almost call this "extended highlights". And Zeferelli over-produces, particularly with camera work. If you want a movie version get Anna Moffo's of over 30 years ago. Now there was a Violetta!

I remember watching and loving this opera every year when I was a child. I was disappointed when the network stopped airing it. Now that Mr. Menotti has passed away, perhaps the news coverage will encourage the production of a good DVD version of this classic. Hope someone's listening!

The sound quality of my VHS copy is fine (and believe me, I'm hard to please in that area). Yes, this movie belongs on DVD in Dolby 5.1. The story is so good, you'll swear it is fiction. But it isn't. A country girl from the Australian outback who becomes a world-famous opera singer? Come on! But it's all true. The first half of the movie is her struggle and rise. From sneaking off the ranch to an audition (of which her father vehemently disapproves) to her scholarship to study singing in Paris--except that the person she's supposed to study with knows nothing about this and refuses to take her. Where's Cecil Beaton when you need him. When you have the greatest singers of the last half of the 20th century, Nilsson and Corelli, you don't need all this excess! The Met has toned this production down shortly after this broadcast. This production is so busy I hardly even noticed the singing. You'll find every thing you need on the stage but a basket ball court.

We should all be grateful for the tenacity of Arrigo Boito.After a disasterous debut,he reworked "Mefistofele" into the masterpiece we enjoy today.I own 2 copies of the opera on cd.The Rudel production with Treigle,Domingo& Caballe as the principles.The Gavazzeni production with Ghiaurov,Bergonzi& Kabaivanska as the principals "Mefistofele" is grand opera at its grandest.From prologue to epilogue,it is a feast for the eyes and ears.The antics at the Easter celebration may raise an eyebrow or two but hang in there. Samuel Ramey was born to play Mefistofele. He is at his zenith in this performance.His voice had to have shook the rafters of the enormous War Memorial.Gabriela Benakova was wonderful in the dual roles of Margherita and Elena. I have both of the Metropolitan Opera DVDs of la Boheme and consider this the finer production, Carreras and Stratas are not only vocally excellent they look the part. Renata Scotto is perfect as Musetta. In the other copy she plays Mimi and Pavarotti is Rodolfo. They are just too healthy to be dying of TB or look like a starving playwright. That copy I would rate as 4 stars.

It is a real shame to realize that there is no difference in quality between the VHS version and this new one on DVD. This is originally such an unbelievable and charming performance with Karajan at his best years and with the unbeatable Schwarzkopf in her most amazing opera role. After having seen this version in a theater, it is very difficult to watch this poor quality video at the time of high-resolution DVD. In addition, the English subtitles from the VHS version have disappeared - I could not believe it. If you really want to own this version, do not spend this money on the DVD version. If you still have a VHS player, go and get the VHS version at low price.
