VHS : Jazz - A Film by Ken Burns
The greatest compliment to this series is that it has created a torrent of discussion and the debates are still raging. I enjoy this series so much, I watch it nearly every year.

My critique has been discussed at length, so I summarize this way:

I appreciate Wynton Marsalis' discussion of the jazz with which he is familiar. This does not qualify Wynton Marsalis to decide, for everyone else, what constitutes jazz when the question of "fusion" comes up.

Much of fusion, both then and now, is largely rhythm section dominated (elecrtic bass, drums, guitar and keys). Therefore, it may have been difficult for a Marsalis, a horn player, to appreciate.

Why refer to Marsalis and not Burns? Because nearly all of Burns' analysis depends upon the ... Read More

VHS : That Certain Age
Deanna Durbin stars in yet another hit as Alice, a girl stuck between childhood and adulthood. One cannot ignore that these pre-teen or teenage years were treated a bit differently than when this film was made, so the kids might behave younger than they would in today's society, but they still deal with similar issues. For example, a writer friend of her father's comes to stay with the family. Vincent Bullitt (Melvyn Douglas) is a charismatic, no-nonsense kind of man that treats Alice as older than her parents do which makes her develop a crush on him. In turn, she does all she can to win his affections, even at the expense of hurting her semi-boyfriend Ken (Jackie Cooper).

One can easily relate to the story, as everyone has grown up and experienced crushes. What makes a trite story ... Read More

VHS : Why Toes Tap With Seiji Ozawa (Wynton Marsalis On Music Series)
As a child, I studied music, but I wanted to brush up on my music theory. This video presents classical and jazz music theory in a very accessible way.

Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite and Duke Ellington's arrangement of the same are used to illustrate different aspects of music. Marsalis uses visual aids that tie the music theory to everyday aspects of life.

This is a great video for kids and adults to learn more about the music that they are appreciating.

VHS : World According to John Coltrane
Even though this DVD is rather short (60 minutes), it captures the essence of the spirituality of Coltrane's music. Covers the approach of openess Coltrane took to his music incorporating Indian and eastern rythmns which inspired him and which was a basis of his spiritual development. It has a complete take on "My favorite things" which is really electrifying and also shows Coltrane jammin with Miles Davis as well. John Coltrane's music captures you and takes you on a spiritual journey unlike any other jazz musician (except maybe Miles). Very introspective interviews with his former sidemen as well. Even though the picture quality is grainy on some parts, the music is alive and mystifying and conveys Coltrane's musical genius. I highly recommend this DVD to any Coltrane fan, this is now one of my favorite ... Read More

VHS : Ship Ahoy
Ship Ahoy, is a must-see for musical fans. The plot is not very strong, but the performances by the actors are great!
Red Skelton plays a hypochondriac author who meets Eleanor Powell while on a cruise. She's a dancing star with Tommy Dorsey and his orchestra and when she gets sent on a mission, she thinks she is working for the government. Frank Sinatra sings a few songs, the expressionless Virginia O'Brien stars as a friend of Eleanor Powell's, and Bert Lahr, best known for his performance as the cowardly lion in "The Wizard of Oz"The Wizard of Oz (Two-Disc Special Edition), adds some comedy as a friend of Red's.
Don't miss Eleanor tapping out a message, moarse code style, to the audience while performing with "On Moonlight Bay."

I agree, this movie should be put on DVD!

VHS : Lady Sings the Blues
I have always adored Billie Holiday since I was a kid. She is, to me, the greatest female jazz singer in history. I was about 11 when I first saw this movie and I was naturally excited when I learned that there was a movie about Billie holiday's life I was completely horrified and disappointed with this movie, Diana's acting, and the singing. I wanted to hear Billie's actual voice with the music, or at least someone who had a similar vocal quality to Billie. Nothing personal to Diana, I also like Diana's singing and some of the other movies that she had played in. I just don't think this was a good choice for her to star in. I felt that they could have chosen someone who looked and sang at least a little similar to Billie. But, I see the director didn't care about that either, instead choosing someone who was famous and popular, though ... Read More

10.Wild Man Blues starring: Woody Allen, Letty Aronson, Soon-Yi Previn, Dan Barrett, Simon Wettenhall

VHS : Wild Man Blues
While this is, technically, an adequate-to-good documentary (Barbara Kopple always does technically proficient work) -- as for its *truthfulness* about the characters involved, specifically, Woody and his now-wife Soon Yi, it's an excellent example of Woody Allen's ongoing manipulation of the media.

Consider this: It's the late 1990s, Woody Allen is in a world of trouble over his affair with a young, underage girl, Soon-Yi, who at one time was the adopted child of Woody's common law wife, Mia Farrow. He was also accused by Mia Farrow of molesting one of her other children. So what does Woody do? By mutual consent, he and Barbara Kopple agree to do a documentary about him and Soon-Yi.

Kopple could hardly refuse.

More than that, she goes ga-ga over her subject, throwing out all critical thinking ... Read More
