Although the instruction was clear, this video was very disappointing. The mixed content (i.e. waltz, foxtrot, and swing) does not lend itself well to an instructional tape. A better choice would be to purchase tapes which focus on each dance. Additionally, I've never encountered the basic East Coast Swing step that Cal teaches; it is unique.

Liza Minelli is such a brilliantly expressive actor and dancer, that she can overcome any tired cliche that's thrown at her (starting with the title of this film), and this one has cliches that weren't even cliches in 1991. She's so great in every scene that the viewer forgets that the talents of Andrea Martin, for example, are wasted. Wasted. Shelley Winters gets a slightly better chance to show her skills, as the wizened, retired theatre exponent who nonetheless plays piano part-time for the troupe, almost defiantly lousy. (But at the big show, there she is in the orchestra pit!). Yes, men are beasts throughout this early-era militant feminist flick. This ballet workout is wonderful. I feel like I'm taking ballet classes again! Absolute beginners may find it a little bit difficult at first or confusing because you need to learn the basics from a teacher who can see you and correct you. It's all about correct posture in ballet...but for me it's perfect. I have taken ballet classes on and off since I was a child. I love this workout because you can't get bored with it. It's very artistic and the music is just wonderful. You can choose classical music or contemporary music. I personally enjoy them both! VERY VERY HAPPY WITH THIS!:)

This is one of my all-time favorite films. The color and dancing are spectacular but I think he most interesting and intelligent aspect of he film is the confusion of reality with unreality; life with an opera. The film, which starts on a concrete level becomes more and more surreal as Gades slips into a form of madness--a madness, perhaps, fated by the Gods. He is obsessed with finding the perfect Carmen and...to their mutual destruction...he finds her. Reality and the opera become increasingly intertwined until Gades distorted reality becomes more powerful than life itself. In parallel with Bizet's Carmen, Gades falls inexplicably and helplessly in love with he faithless Carmen. I won't write more. You really need to see it yourself. I agree with the awful teaching, but what was worse for me was the camera angles. We need to see the WHOLE BODY, people!! Showing a close-up of the torso while trying to get certain steps down is ridiculous! Getting creative with camera angles is not helpful during an instructional video. The best thing to do is just set the camera steady and let us see the whole body. The whole thing was a mess!

A pretty good version of a rather stodgey old musical. There's no way it can seem fresh, but as a museum piece this version isn't bad thanks to Ann Margaret and Bobby Darin. This was an ideal role for Darin - who likely would have done some broadway musicals thanks to his talents as a singer, dancer, and actor (a classic triple threat) - if his damaged heart hadn't precluded such strenuous roles. He's at his punky best as the ambitious guy on the make, and delivers the best number of the movie in This Isn't Heaven, a song written especially for the movie. I wish he'd been cast in more musicals to utilize his wide range of talents, but it's great to see him here. Esp in the same movie with Ann Margaret, another triple threat.

I got this about 5 years ago and found it to be very helpful to learn the basic line dances. I wish she would it out on dvd! I had put it away for a few years and was going through my stuff the other night and found it and got the line dance fever again! I'm not up-to-date on the newest dances, but if you want good instructions on these dances then this is the one for you!
