VHS : Great Caruso
This is a highly fictionaliased and heavily sentimental portrait of the great operatic tenor .It is lavishly mounted and has many popular ingredients which all helped in making it a major commercial hit in its day.

There is the rags to riches nature of the story as Enrico Caruso rises from poverty on the back streets of Naples to becoming the darling of New York society ,overcoming the death of his mother while still a child and building a carrer in the opera houses of Europe before his US debut. There is the theme of his falling in love with a scion of New York society ,in the face of unbending parental disapproval .There are lots of popular operatic arias and a strong dose of religiosity ,with the Bach -Gounoud "Ave Marie" a particular standout ..for those with more populist taste there is a strong ... I remember watching and loving this opera every year when I was a child. I was disappointed when the network stopped airing it. Now that Mr. Menotti has passed away, perhaps the news coverage will encourage the production of a good DVD version of this classic. Hope someone's listening!

I purchased the video on laser disc when it first came out and I have worn it out listening to it. I'd love to have a DVD of the work, and additionally a CD to listen to in the car. Alas neither appear to be available. You'll love the interplay between the modern and opera within the opera, as noted above. I saw the production at both the Met and the Lyric Opera in Chicago. It is a superb new work.

VHS : Stretchin' To The Classics with Richard Simmons
This video is the perfect way for me to ease into my day. I get up, put on the coffee, then pop in "Stretchin' To The Classics". The music is soothing and the stretching takes away that morning stiffness. By the time the tape is over 15 minutes later, I feel calm and limber. And, my coffee is just finishing.

I also use it sometimes in the evening when I get the urge to snack. Popping in this tape gives me 15 minutes to let go of that urge and replace it with a different type of feel-good.

The fact that there is no talking, just music, in this tape makes it particularly soothing. The moves are learned quickly without cueing because they are slow.

I have successfully used Richard's tapes for years beginning with the original "Sweatin' to the Oldies" from 1988. After countless playings, my old tape ... Read More

VHS : Andrea Bocelli - A Night in Tuscany
I have always been deeply moved by music to the very core of my being, at times bringing tears and actual pain in hearing particularly moving pieces performed. Andrea Bocelli's singing comes from within his soul and inner self, as demonstrated by his incredible expressiveness of what he is singing. He also has a huge lung/breath capacity, and to me unimagineable capabilities in controlling it. I am definitely not an opera officianado, but thoroughly enjoy this concert of familiar exerpts including some in duet with Nuccia Focile. The sections of the tape which are of him speaking of his home and family are especially endearing and much appreciated. Too often we put artists/operatic singers on a pedestal and fail to remember that they, like us, are warm human beings who treasure their homes and family.
