VHS : Treasure Island (1990)
This is indeed the very best film version of Robert Louis Stevenson's definitive pirate adventure ever made. Christian Bale plays the young Jim Hawkins and Charlton Heston is Long John Silver, and both are excellent. Add Christopher Lee as Blind Pew and the rest of a terrific cast including Oliver Reed, Clive Wood, and Julian Glover among the many actors that bring the story to life. Filmed on location in Jamaica and on the awesome ship Hispaniola, the scenery and cinematography are marvelous.

And the soundtrack is performed by The Cheiftains!
It is the best pirate soundtrack ever, adding great drama and realism to the proceedings, since the music seems so timely for the period.

Heston's Long John Silver is sensational, and his son Fraser's direction is ... Read More

VHS : Sarah Plain And Tall
First off, let me clarify in my personal response that I've never been a fan of the historical fiction genre. Historical fiction books bore me, and they never seem to contain the excitement found in contemporary fiction. Sarah, Plain and Tall, while more character-centric than most historical fiction books, still just didn't catch my interest. I was just glad that unlike many historical fiction books, this one actually didn't shove random historical facts down the readers' throats in massive clumps--the historical details were there, but very subtle. Still, the plot was too plain, with not enough branches and wacky plot twists. Everything was hopelessly predictable, and I know children's authors can do much better than that. That being said, I'd still like to read the sequels (never can pass ... Read More

From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler (Marcus Cole, 1995)

While doing the research on this film, I discovered that there have actually been two film versions of E. L. Konigsburg's delightful novel, with this one being the more recent. Most reviewers seem to prefer the 1973 version. Maybe they're right. But not having seen it, I have to say I liked this one well enough as a trip down memory lane.

Veteran TV director Cole (Beyond the Prairie: The True Story of Laura Ingalls Wilder) directs from Betty Goldberg (Trapper John, M.D.)'s script. Cole casts Lauren Bacall as the mysterious and un-first-named Mrs. Basil, Jean Marie Barnwell (Angie) as Claudia, and Jesse Lee (Bobby of the newer Brady Bunch stuff) as Claudia's brother Jamie. The story, for those of you who have been ... Read More

VHS : Sesame Street - Christmas Eve on Sesame Street
It just isn't Christmas for me until I watch Christmas Eve on Sesame Street. My birthday is Christmas Eve and one year I received an old cassette tape recorder as a gift. My sister and I, age 9 and 6 at the time, recorded the whole movie from the tv while we watched. I would give anything now to find that tape with our giggles, comments and singing on it. It is such a sincere, calm and beautiful Christmas special. I'm always surprised that more people haven't heard of it. It takes me back to the very best of my childhood Christmases and I so enjoy sharing it with my children now.

I've seen this movie at least a half dozen times and love it every time. I never read the book, so I can't make a comparison but in the movie, I love the evolvution of the character of Willie throughout the story.

Besides being a heartwarming animal flick, it is a wonderful story about community.
