VHS : Rear Window
Spying through a glass darkly (his camera lens), L.B. Jefferies (Jimmy Stewart) believes a neighbor (Raymond Burr) has murdered his wife. His evidence is circumstanial at best and the wheelchair bound photographer has to convince his girlfriend Lisa (Grace Kelly)of the crime. In the process he puts his friends in harm's way. Hitch laces his film with more than a touch of humor and irony pulling this thriller together as it's L.B.'s peeping that reveals the ugly underneath--revealing something unsavory about himself as well without him truly realizing it.

One of Hitch's hidden classics for years was finally revealed again to the public in the early 80's. This remaster looks extremely good (and is the same as the boxed set remaster) but keep in mind the age of the film, when it ... Read More

VHS : Midnight Lace
Fog-shrouded London is the setting for MIDNIGHT LACE, a glossy thriller starring Doris Day as a terrorised heiress.

Doris Day plays Kit, an American heiress, newly-married to suave English businessman Tony Preston (Rex Harrison). Kit's life couldn't be happier, until she becomes the target of obscene phonecalls and begins to have 'accidents'. The detectives at Scotland Yard begin to feel that perhaps Kit is seeking attention, and even Kit's loving Aunt Bea (Myrna Loy) has her doubts. Is Kit going mad? Or is a killer really out to get her?

Doris Day delivers a finely-pitched performance in this frothy thriller. In order to convey the reality of her character's situation, Ms Day drew from her abusive first marriage to musician Al Jordan. The painful memories that Day re-lived ... Read More

VHS : The Usual Suspects
It contains one surprise after another. I could never guess what's happening next, especially the ending.

If you like a different story with unexpected turns. This is a MUST-SEE.

The ony trouble is after you watch it once, the second time is not as suspenseful more because you already know what's happening.

No wonder it got 2 Ocars in 1996. One was given to Christopher McQuarrie for best screenplay. The other was given to Kevin Spacey for best supporing actor.

4.Laura (1944) starring: Gene Tierney, Dana Andrews, Clifton Webb, Vincent Price, Judith Anderson

VHS : Laura (1944)
The presence of Vincent Price alone is enough to make this film worth watching. The man had one of the most memorable theatrical personalities that ever graced the screen. His voice rang like a haunting tones cutting through fog. His smallest gestures expressed volumes of expression and emotion. Even when he overacted (which was much of the time) he did it with a singular type of flair that made it engaging rather than laughable. He had style. He had flair. And he had panache. That's a star. That's what makes an icon. His role in "Laura" shows yet another facet of his abilities. His characterization of Shelby Carpenter is of a man who's weak yet charming and fickle yet strangely loyal. It's a complex role and he managed it with the aplomb typical of his bearing. It's no surprise that his presence is dominant most of ... Read More

5.Dial M for Murder starring: Ray Milland, Grace Kelly, Robert Cummings, John Williams (II), Anthony Dawson

VHS : Dial M for Murder
One of Alfred Hitchcock's classic films. Ray Milland is exceptionally good. Dimitry Tiomkin was one of the finest Hollywood film composers; however, in my humble opinion, there are some scenes in the movie, which could've used more suspenseful music.

6.Night of the Hunter (1955) starring: Mitchum, Winters, Gish, Beddoe, Va

Lillian Gish opens this movie w/ a warning to beware of wolves in sheep's clothing. This sets the stage for the Reverend Harry Powell (Robert Mitchum from the equally classic Cape Fear), who roams the countryside searching for converts (aka: victims) to his special brand of fire-and-brimstone religion. This religion includes Powell's "listening to the voice of God", which will lead him to a town where he can prey upon the ignorant souls within. Enter Shelley Winters (Whoever Slew Auntie Roo?, Poseiden Adventure) as the widow of an executed robber / killer (Peter Graves), who has hidden $10,000.00 somewhere on their property. Unfortunately, Powell shared a cell with dear hubby and tried without success to get him to reveal the location of the money. Now released, Powell sets out to find the place, marry the widow, and collect ... Read More

7.Day of the Jackal starring: Edward Fox, Terence Alexander, Michel Auclair, Alan Badel, Tony Britton
directed by: Fred Zinnemann
November 11, 1997
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

VHS : Day of the Jackal
One of the rare films that surpasses the book it is based on. This classic thriller desperately needs to be issued in a special edition. There are brief sequences in the movie that are missing in the DVD. Notably the scene when the Jackal goes up the stairs in the Austrian hotel, and back down to the lobby when he notices the bodyguard hiding in the landing. In addition we need some special features: the making of the film, historical background to the story and a biography of Fred Zinneman.

when so many inferior movies have DVDs repackaged and reissued in every way possible, it is unbelievable that this ultimate political thriller should be neglected.

D-day had failed. Kennedy is president, Joseph sr. that is, not John. Hitler is about to celebrate his 75th birthday. That was all the exposition I needed. It's springtime for Hitler in Germainia. We lost. It is the early 60's & the cold war has taken a hard left turn from what we know happen. The Germans are still fighting the Russians. Hitler wants a peace treaty with The United States. It is about to happen. President Kennedy is coming to Berlin & bringing a lot of reporters. One problem: the Final Solution, what we now know as the Holocaust has never been made public. What were they thinking? Perhaps director Garry Marshall thought he could do for S&M what he'd done for the women of the evening in Pretty Woman. Wrap up an edgy topic in a big cute bow, and through humor make it palatable, even entertaining, to the masses. But you thought wrong Mr. Marshall. Actually, it is a surprisingly entertaining movie, it is just that most of the humor is unintentional. You can't believe the movie got green lighted when it was so obviously doomed to be a disaster.

They took a novel by Anne Rice, written under the pseudonym of Anne Rampling (a name she chose as a tribute to actress Charlotte Rampling) and then they grafted on a totally gratuitous story about international jewell thieves and the cops (played by Dan Akroyd and Rosie O'Donnell??? and no, I am not making this up. Who could make up stuff like that?) ... Read More

VHS : Town That Dreaded Sundown
The year is 1946 and while some last minute soldiers are still making their way home, most of them are already back from the war and are starting up families, going to work or school, or just enjoying their time at home. Little did they know that on this day, Sunday, March 3rd, that a hooded killer would begin his onslaught right here in Texarkana, Arkansas. They call him The Phantom Killer and his legacy begins here and now.

This film is in some desperate need of restoration and an official DVD release, for that matter. The dated film reel is too dark during most of the scenes I wanted to see most, which is just about every scene with The Phantom Killer since most of his kills take place at night. I feel it hurts the film more than anything. If it was just grainy throughout the film, then it'd kind of add to the general feel of the movie. The ... Read More
