VHS : Midnight Lace
Fog-shrouded London is the setting for MIDNIGHT LACE, a glossy thriller starring Doris Day as a terrorised heiress.

Doris Day plays Kit, an American heiress, newly-married to suave English businessman Tony Preston (Rex Harrison). Kit's life couldn't be happier, until she becomes the target of obscene phonecalls and begins to have 'accidents'. The detectives at Scotland Yard begin to feel that perhaps Kit is seeking attention, and even Kit's loving Aunt Bea (Myrna Loy) has her doubts. Is Kit going mad? Or is a killer really out to get her?

Doris Day delivers a finely-pitched performance in this frothy thriller. In order to convey the reality of her character's situation, Ms Day drew from her abusive first marriage to musician Al Jordan. The painful memories that ... Read More

VHS : Laura (1944)
The presence of Vincent Price alone is enough to make this film worth watching. The man had one of the most memorable theatrical personalities that ever graced the screen. His voice rang like a haunting tones cutting through fog. His smallest gestures expressed volumes of expression and emotion. Even when he overacted (which was much of the time) he did it with a singular type of flair that made it engaging rather than laughable. He had style. He had flair. And he had panache. That's a star. That's what makes an icon. His role in "Laura" shows yet another facet of his abilities. His characterization of Shelby Carpenter is of a man who's weak yet charming and fickle yet strangely loyal. It's a complex role and he managed it with the aplomb typical of his bearing. It's no surprise that his presence ... Read More

VHS : Fargo (1996)
Fargo is among the better efforts of the Coen Brothers. Frances McDormand won an Oscar for her portrayal of Brainerd Police Chief Marge Gunderson. It was well deserved, as she not only mastered the Midwest accent but created a complex character that was almost naive, always seeing the good in people and situations; but nevertheless, was a clever detective who relentlessly pursued criminals in spite of the fact that she was pregnant. William H. Macy and Steve Buscemi were also great in this movie. They captured the flaws and weakness in their respective characters well. The whole darn cast was excellent, and everything worked. You might be laughing at the quirky Midwest characters and their funny accents, but then you have to admire the son-of-a Gundersons.

Nobody Drowns in Mineral Lake

Orson Welles' movies never cease to mesmerize me.

Filmmakers learn from Welles. In fact, I've written about Welles on several occasions, including a one-person play.

Unfortunately, as innovative and fascinating as his films might be, Welles' movies do not appeal to a mass audience, like, for example, the work of Alfred Hitchcock.

Part of the problem is that Orson's movies are usually populated with unsympathetic characters. Even his heroes are not people that audiences tend to like.

Nevertheless, when one is in the mood for a Welles film, one will get a filmmaking experience like no other. His work with camera, lighting and sound was uncanny.

VHS : Sudden Fear
Alright, there are no special features. Alright, so there aren't even any subtitles. And there are a couple of seconds where the picture had grain- ok, I give. But overall, this film is excellently presented. I don't have any complaints about the sound or the picture- in fact, I thought it was remarkably clear considering that it hasn't been preserved as well as a lot of other pictures. Trust me, the plot more than makes up for any minor annoyances.

In an Oscar nominated performance, Joan Crawford plays successful playwright Myra Hudson. When she falls in love with a handsome actor named Lester (played by Jack Palance, nominated for Best Supporting Actor) everything seems perfect. But when she discovers her husband's plot to murder her, she designs a plan to reverse the gun.

This movie is great, and if you're ... Read More

8.Blue Dahlia starring: Alan Ladd, Veronica Lake, William Bendix, Howard Da Silva, Doris Dowling

VHS : Blue Dahlia
The Blue Dahlia is a quintessential film noir, one of the great films that defined the genre. Army men return from World War II to find their wives drunk and cheating with scumbag jazz club owners. Whether this film has not been released on DVD in the U.S. is quite curious, considering almost every film noir has been burned onto DVD in various collections of the genre. My guess is that Turner owns the film, and hopes to air it only on TCM, or the potentially racist comment in the film has people worried. There were racists in the 1940s, and denying it by not releasing a film is pretty silly.

VHS : The Third Man (50th Anniversary Edition)
The lure of the stars of this film give you great anticipation of what will unfold. Joseph Cotton walks a circuitous path to find out what happened to his old friend who has brought him to Europe with the promise of a job. Orson Welles as usual is the character in the focal point even though he doesn't appear till the final third of the movie. The story line is off putting to me, but the actors give a solid perfomrance. This shares the title of a tv show from the 50's but the plot is nothing like the TV series.

VHS : Mask of Dimitrios (1944)
With all respect to the wonderful Peter Lorre and Sydney Greenstreet,
I feel that it's Zachary Scott who makes this film unforgettable.
Sinister, treacherous, slimy -- you wouldn't trust him with your
wallet or your wife. But you can see how Faye Emerson (in a
memorable performance) falls in love with him. Adapted from Eric
Ambler's spy thriller, and directed by Jean Negulesco, who did
"Humoresque" two years later. We can only be grateful that it's
available on VHS.
