VHS : Now & Forever
NOW AND FOREVER is an excellent film that I think most people will enjoy. Gary Cooper was already a superstar when this movie was released in 1934 but Carole Lombard was rapidly rising and would be a major star by the end of the year as would the amazing six-year-old Shirley Temple. Some Temple fans may be disappointed that she is not the whole show as normal for Temple vehicles, one person gives the movie a bad review in part because she does not sing but keep in mind Shirley had not yet reached full stardom and wasn't yet established as singing in her films. It's not a children's film (although my eight-year-old niece loved it, I bought her a copy) rather a film with a child in one of the leading roles so the whole family can enjoy this vehicle. Carole Lombard doesn't get to show her ... Read More

This movie is great viewing.Just the ticket for people trapped in a mundane existence. It starts out in seedy Vera Cruz sailors bars and takes you on a wild ride with desperate characters in a romp through beautifully shot southern Mexico. One of those great adventures in a foreign land movies.A boozy, brawling, sexy, and somewhat vulgar movie, and very entertaining!

Let me start off by saying I love Kurosawa and have seen many of his films, but this one was a little slow and felt too simple and shallow. I got the point of what he was trying to say almost immediately (truth is relative and depends on the person and that everyone's version of a story is told to make him or her look best), and didn't need to go through every character's perspective to get that point. It felt like he painfully belabored the point and not much else was added to make the plot interesting. And in some places the acting was overdone for the plot/genre and was actually a little bit distracting to me. I'm not saying that I disliked the movie, I just didn't think it was that it could qualify as a masterpiece.

VHS : Breathless (1983)
This is definetly one of Richard Gere's sexiest flicks and is even sexier than AMERICAN GIGALO, and AN OFFICER & A GENTLEMAN

VHS : Native Son (1986)
I understand the perspectives of the other online-reviewers; however, being an English teacher, I have found this video to be quite beneficial and complimentary in assisting me and helping my students to understand the characterization and themes in Native Son. It is not an outstanding performance; however, it does offer a color cinematic version, while having actors that are recongnizable to a younger generation.

I do not believe that many outstanding novels can ever really be properly and accurately portryaed on film; that is really a daunting task for directors, writers, and producers. To this date, I can only say that The Color Purple has actually achieved cinematic success, due in large part to the creative genius of Steven Spielberg. That is a rarity.

However, I have been trying to ... Read More

In general, I don't like Emilio Estevez's brat pack films, but this isn't about brat pack. Along with Maximum Overdrive, he plays the hero/antihero role well. Most Americans could identify with the economic problems facing the farmers who John Wisdom was trying to help. Wisdoms methods were at first shocking, however, in this day and age, shock is the only way of gettng past the largely ignorant, jaded media, more interested in Britney Spears lack of hair than the fact that we are importing 800 billion dollars more than we export to other contries. This film needs to be rereleased on DVD.

VHS : Road to Perdition
This is another film of great subtlety where I think Tom Hanks really plays one of his most daring roles as a father of two boys that also works for the mob during prohibition era.
The movie is really about a son and father struggling to know one another and being forced together after the loss of the rest of the family.
Jude Law also plays one of his darkest characters as a sick assassin for hire.
The directing and lighting are absolutely flawless, and when I first saw the climax scene in the theater, I was amazed at how the silence and darkness were used to make such an atmosphere.
