VHS : Sergeant York
This film begins in the Cumberland Valley of Tennessee. It shows some men on horses shooting revolvers. The rest of the film shows York never owning an expensive horse or revolver! People are singing in a chapel. There are scenes of country life in those backwoods, a hard life for many. There is entertainment in a rural tavern. The pastor warns Alvin York against his crooked path. Do the wealthy look down on the poor? Alvin makes a down payment on that bottom land. Men go around armed. Alvin works hard to earn the rest of the money. Alvin plans to win the shooting match and win the big prize. Percussion cap muzzle loaders are used. Pastor Pyle counsels Alvin against his anger. But Alvin sulks. Riding on a stormy night a flash of lightning gives a warning. Alvin gets religion. The lost sheep ... Read More

Paul Tibbets-Enola Gay both names that mean part of the history. This is an absorbing subject, carefully handled about the officer who piloted and drooped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima.
Even I think Taylor wasn't the most appropriate actor for this role, ( I just can think in three names for that moment: Robert Donat, Fredric March and Michael Redgrave) and the film surely would have elevated to a major status.
The only default to my mind is the real nightmare derived from this action; the awful sequels that surrounded the mind and personality of Tibbets are simply absent. There was a very long introduction showing the backgrounds.
A well supporting cast accompanied him. Good point for Melvin Frank.
Two years later after this film was released, the American journalist ... Read More

I watched the DI as a kid, enjoying it, never dreaming one day I would wind up as one. Several years after leaving Parris Island with a (luckily) successful tour on the Drill Field under my belt, the movie came on one day and of course I had to watch it.
I was taken back this time when I saw the platoon number; 194.
Platoon 194 had been my last platoon in Dec 1973. It was the best platoon I had the honor of being a part of. Those were Marines if there every was and my hat still goes off to each of them. I do not believe I could have every of had a better ending to a tour of duty then having Platoon 194 as my last platoon. I believe my recruits would still tell you the movie recruits had it easy...

VHS : A Guy Named Joe
A GUY NAMED JOE is a wonderful, old-fashioned, patriotic film made in 1944 during WWII. Starring Spencer Tracy, Irene Dunne, Van Johnson, Ward Bond, and Lionel Barrymore, A GUY NAMED JOE is the story of Pete (Tracy), a hot shot bomber pilot, who dies when he purposefully crashes his disabled plane into a German aircraft carrier. Dorinda (Dunne), Pete's girl friend and a pilot with the Women's Air Ferrying Corps, is devastated, especially since she has just convinced Pete to take a safer assignment stateside teaching new recruits how to fly. In Heaven, which looks remarkably like an Army airfield only with soft, fluffy, white clouds on the ground, "The Commanding General" (Barrymore) makes Pete a guardian angel to Ted Randall (Johnson), a young, unsure Army pilot. Pete invisibly helps Ted through flight training ... Read More

I saw this when it first came out and had never before heard of the SS St Louis...and I naively supposed that while other countries, such as Cuba, would turn away these helpless people, the USA would welcome them a la Statue of Liberty...("Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!")
apparently I was wrong, and my shock was first in discovering that this was indeed a true historical event and also that WE turned these poeple AWAY! THAT horrified me more than anything else and to this day I still do not understand WHY. This is the USA! What was up with FDR?
Excellent cast, great acting, right from the heart, and one is aware that the ... Read More

I hope that this is the closest that I ever come to combat in my life. Thank God for the men that put their lives on the line to keep us, and the world, free. Hats off to Spielberg for the realism of the combat. That should be enough for all of us to make a promise to ourselves to personally thank as many vets as we can for serving to keep us free. War is no walk in the park, and this movie comes closest to capturing just how close to hell it really is. This movie teaches a lot about sacrifice, courage, heroism, and emotion. Sometimes there are causes greater than our own selves which are worth sacrificing for. A great movie for this era. Too many men of that generation have passed away - this captures a little bit of what was special about that generation. A must see for all kids as soon as they are capable of handling it.

Dutch Holland (James Stewart) was in the Air Force during WWII, but once his term was over, he picked up his old life again and joined a baseball league. He even got married to a beautiful and loving woman named Sally (June Allyson). One day, just when things are looking good for the family, he's asked to leave his job and join the Air Force again. Sally doesn't think he will, but he agrees quickly and loves his job. Despite the danger involved with flying, Dutch takes to it like a duck in water. He soon becomes in charge of his own crew, much to the chagrin of his wife.

This movie boasts its airplanes quite a lot and its popular cast not as much. In fact, Stewart requested to make this movie because of his own time in the Air Force during the war. He is excellent in the film, and doesn't seem to mind taking second billing to ... Read More

VHS : One Against the Wind
Mary Lindell is a household name in Great Britain. Thank God that HALLMARK took the time to recreate her daringly true escapades in smuggling evaders into unoccupied zones during WW2. For dramatic purposes, much of ONE AGAINST THE WIND has been rearranged and condensed . As exciting as this presentation of Mary Lindell's exploits is, her real life was even MORE dramatic than what HALLMARK assembled!( Read the book NO DRUMS,NO TRUMPETS by J.B. Wayne!!!!!)

Nevertheless, this film is extraordinary for what it accomplishes and Judy Davis is spot-on as the resourceful, courageous and mulishly strong-minded Mary. It is significant to note that Mary Lindell was 45 years old when she and her family began smuggling people out of occupied France, first by sheer bluff and boldness! Her methods became much more "professional" as the ... Read More
