A must see if you are a baseball fan or a fan of comedy and wonderful endings. The only thing that would make it better is if it were on DVD.

VHS : Garbage Picking Field Goal Kicking Philadelphia Phenomenon
We enjoy movies about underdogs, and this movie with its overly long title is no exception. Tony Danza is Philadelphia garbage man Barney Gorman, who has developed incredible leg strength by kicking a hydraulic control handle on his garbage truck, named Ethel. When Philadelphia Eagles' recruiter Wendy Fox (Julie Stewart) spots Barney kicking water bottles incredible distances, she gets the idea to add Barney to the team. At the time the Eagles were doing poorly and their kicker was missing easy field goals and extra points (according to this movie - I have no clue as to how the real Eagles were doing at that point).

Barney becomes an instant celebrity as he embodies the spirit of every person who has ever dreamed of playing for a professional football team. However, Barney encounters ... Read More

I was fortunate to see this when it first aired in 1987. I knew as soon as it ended that it would become a classic. I agree that it is no doubt one of the best, if not the best, baseball films of all time. It has humor, race relationships, romance, some rather interesting baseball, and great performances by all the cast. Tis a pity that HBO hasn't seen fit to put this on DVD. I would have it in a heartbeat. Go Studs and Dixie.

I always thought this story line was original, but now that I have seen "Glory Road" I am embarrassed to admit, I am not as well versed on college basketball history and can see where its genisis came from. So this movie is now the 2nd best basketball movie I have ever seen.

VHS : The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh
Growing up in the 1970's, times were great. Big Wheels and Green Machines. Bomb Pops to Italian Ice. Mr. Softee and those amazing soft serve ice cream cones with sprinkles. Metal roller skates and banana seat bicycles. But nothing speaks more of the 70's than the movie, "The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh". In a time when things were more simple, The Fish, told a tale of a basketball team who needed a miracle, a found in the cards or should I say Psychic. Needless to say the moral of the story is about beliefs. It's OK to have beliefs in other things as along as you believe in yourself first. Now that I live in Atlanta, finding this great comedic tale was certainly an excellent find. "The Fish" reminds me of those summer days and simpler times, yet again saving me from what's going in the world today, if only for an 1 ... Read More

Im not going to tell you all about this film, or tell you who is in it, or what they did, etc. Everyone knows Walter Matthau plays an ex-ball player who drinks, smokes and swears to much thru the movie, and also that Tatum O'Neil plays his ex-girlfriend's daughter who he gets to pitch and all the other stuff, like Tanner swearing and saying the "N" word, and such. All this has been said and reviewed in earlier post. I saw this movie when it first came out in 1976. I was 9 turning 10 years old that year. I cant believe its been 32 years now. WOW! Im gettin old. I believe that this movie is a time capsule. Its an era and time, long gone by. Sure, there is little league baseball today, but its not the same as it was back then. People who were kids back then (like me) can tell you that the whole scene was different back then, ... Read More

We loved it and laughed all the way through it. I hope a real coach
doesn't have to go through all the antics that Fred MacMurray went
through. You have to like Fred MacMurray to really appreciate
this movie. I guess what made us laugh most were the teens. Our
daughter was the same way. I wasn't sure either of us would live
through those times.

I admit that I am a baseball junkie and did not know as much about this part of the great american pastime as I should have and before I saw the movie I did not know the historical perspective of the subject matter. But that changed.

This is just an out and out great movie with a wonderful cast, Tom Hanks and Geena Davis turn in wonderful performances. I am not a big fan of either Madonna or Rosie O'Donnell, but because of their efforts in this movie I do take a double look whenever I ssee their names because they were brilliant here.

And the comdey is steller. It is full of memorable lines that have become part of baseball's lexicon (well at least for baseball fans) with "There's no Crying In Baseball" something that is used by everyone everywhere nowadays, probably more so than any other catch phrase from any ... Read More

VHS : The Karate Kid Part II
Following Daniel-San's (Macchio) triumphant, albeit incredibly improbable, victory at the All Valley Under 18 Karate Tournament, there is little time to celebrate. Mr. Miyagi (Morita) gets a letter from Okinawa informing him that his father is dying. He knows this is a potentially deadly situation because of an old grudge with his former best friend Sato. Nonetheless, Miyagi let's the recently dumped Daniel-San (it was only a matter of time before Elisabeth Shue realized she was dating a sissy) come along for the trip.

Upon arriving in Okinawa, Miyagi soon realizes that he has very little time. Not only will his father die very soon, but his former best friend Sato - who incidentally has a watermelon for a head - wants to fight him to the death. It turns out that Miyagi left his homeland eons ago because both he and Sato liked ... Read More
