VHS : Stuart Saves His Family
There are about ten laughs in this film by smarmfart Al Franken. Worth seeing once.

But Franken's brilliant creation is Stuart himself.

Full disclosure: I loath Franken's politics and most of his other humour, but this work is a brilliant exception.

Stuart Saves his family is an overlong extension of a SNL skit about "Stuart" the over twelve-stepped psychological casualty of our continuously self-indulgent selves. Rather than overcome his traumas, Stuart nurses them like a bacteriological growth in an inner Petri dish. He stumbles through a series of activities where his therapiezed world view provides conflict with others functioning normally (operating thetans), and abnormally (everyone in his family). I never really got the works of LRH, but his paranoia ... Read More

I bought this for my oldest son, a golfer who enjoyed Conway when he was a kid. It was very disappointing. I forgot how sexest that era was! It was just not amusing, especially the Golf Bible segment. Lord! I am getting old!

All the material on this disk plus more is contained in the three-disk Definitive Collection which at the time of this writing is in print, available on Amazon, and very inexpensive (especially through 3rd-party sellers). What the D.C. lacks is any printed material that might be included with this Anchor Bay release.
Mr. Bill, BTW, seemed a lot funnier to me during his SNL run (this seems to be the general consensus), but even with hindsight, I'd probably still purchase the D.C., if only for an inexpensive trip down Memory Lane. Rating reflects the material, which I have seen, and not this particular release, which I haven't.

Duck Soup (1933) - Leo McCarey

The Marx Brothers are almost totally unique in the history of film, and when I say unique, I'm not even referring to how innovative they are. True, they definitely developed a particular style of comedy that I would say is probably now the dominant form in all of American comedy. How would I characterize it? It's difficult, but it includes a combination of anarchy, irony, and self-awareness. I paraphrase Roger Ebert when he states that you can clearly see what the Marx Bros. influenced, but its difficult to see what influenced them, other than the rich tradition of music hall.

However, again, when I say that they are totally unique, I'm referring to something else. If one notices carefully at all the groups and individuals that the Marx Brothers ... Read More

I agree with most here who think this movie is WAY overlooked. It's a classic! As a smoker myself, I find it hilarious and ironic....the town goes to all the trouble of quitting smoking for 30 days in order to win $25 million from a tobacco company, only to attract a government missile factory to town that spews "legal" smoke all over the place. It also shows smokers as the regular, NON-trash people they were/are - and THAT's refreshing, at least to me. It's a hoot - the characters are great - and I watch my old, worn out VHS version with bad sound over and over again.

One must never compare the Stage to the Film when it comes to musicals. Sometimes they are better than the original. Sometimes worse. ALWAYS different! That's just the nature of the transition. This is one of the great film musicals of all time. It's just not Sandy Wilson's "The Boy Friend". I love the stage play as well. This is a musical film about a production of the stage musical with all kinds of backstage intrigue as well as the terrific device of seeing a number "as is", as the director would have done if only he had money, and as the film maker in attendance would make a movie of the same number. Divine!

Good Old Fashion humor. A couple of Film classic scenes ( the Building Consultant telling Gary Grant "tear it down" or the painting Foreman listening to Myrna Loy explain in great detail the shades of colors that she wants the rooms painted and the Foreman telling the painters "Red, Blue, Green and Yellow"

VHS : Time Of Their Lives
In the early 1940's Bud Abbot and Lou Costello produced many many 'b' films for universal. The usual pattern was that bullying Abbot and Child like Costello somehow get involved with mad scientists, gangsters and adventurers concocting wild schemes. Prat falls and chases are their stock in trade. This film however was a break from that pattern and the effect is magic.

It starts in Revolutionary New York where Lou is a struggling tinker and Bud the major Domo for a Tory land owner. This seems pretty much in their usual patter but in short order Lou is mistaken for a British spy and along with the lady of the mannor murdered and cursed.

Time passes and their ghosts, trapped by the curse, are doomed to linger on the grounds of the manor until they can prove their innocence.
