It arrived in a reasonable amount of time. The condition was ok, not great but ok. It did appear as if it came from a video rental company which was a bit troubling. All in all it was an ok experience although I think for the condition a bit overpriced.

"October 1918" is the date for this story. German soldiers are planting explosives to destroy the advancing British soldiers when they occupy a French city. The townspeople hurriedly evacuate the town. The British are warned, they will not march into town. Instead Private Plumpick [some pun?] will be sent in to scout the town and defuse the bombs - by himself! [Believable?] Discovered by the Germans, he flees into a building for refuge and safety; it is the local insane asylum. The result of the German withdrawal is the inmates can wander freely into the deserted town and select new clothes from the abandoned homes. [This slow-paced action doesn't seem too funny to me.] Comedy is in part cultural, and attitudes change. Perhaps the humor is in suggesting the clothes make the man or woman? Or what ... Read More

VHS : Stuart Saves His Family
There are about ten laughs in this film by smarmfart Al Franken. Worth seeing once.

But Franken's brilliant creation is Stuart himself.

Full disclosure: I loath Franken's politics and most of his other humour, but this work is a brilliant exception.

Stuart Saves his family is an overlong extension of a SNL skit about "Stuart" the over twelve-stepped psychological casualty of our continuously self-indulgent selves. Rather than overcome his traumas, Stuart nurses them like a bacteriological growth in an inner Petri dish. He stumbles through a series of activities where his therapiezed world view provides conflict with others functioning normally (operating thetans), and abnormally (everyone in his family). I never really got the works of LRH, but his paranoia about ... Read More

In fact I am not under 13 -it's just that I happen to have an old computer and the new protocols' rampant paranoia is simply preventing me from openly and honestly expressing my views. {To the site administrators: as the famous 'Rebel Without A Cause' quote goes, "You read too many comics!"...}

Now let's go straight to the point of it:

Most laypeople have polarized views about taxes -they either disregard the whole matter or become paralyzed by their fear of what they perceive as a Kafkian chaos.

'Mating Game' should be adopted as an introductory exercise by high-school and IRS extension courses since it gives revealing insight on the rationale behind general taxing theory and procedures, as well as their articulation with the whole of the legal system (federal and otherwise ... Read More

VHS : MTV - The State - Skits and Stickers
I happened upon this VHS in a Blockbuster clearance rack about 10 years ago and grabbed it right away. The State had been one of my favorite shows and I needed my 'fix.'

The selection of skits here is great and quite varied. There are a couple notable omissions including Captain Monterey Jack, Old Fashioned Guy and Hits from the 70s. However, if you love off-beat humor and want a good sample of what The State had to offer, this is a great introduction.

This is a well-done adaptation of the book. It isn't perfect, but kids like it much better than the 1950s cartoon version. For teachers looking for a good version to accompany the book, I recommend it. I have used both and sometimes use both as a good jumping off place for discussion.

Duck Soup (1933) - Leo McCarey

The Marx Brothers are almost totally unique in the history of film, and when I say unique, I'm not even referring to how innovative they are. True, they definitely developed a particular style of comedy that I would say is probably now the dominant form in all of American comedy. How would I characterize it? It's difficult, but it includes a combination of anarchy, irony, and self-awareness. I paraphrase Roger Ebert when he states that you can clearly see what the Marx Bros. influenced, but its difficult to see what influenced them, other than the rich tradition of music hall.

However, again, when I say that they are totally unique, I'm referring to something else. If one notices carefully at all the groups and individuals that the Marx Brothers influenced ... Read More

I agree with most here who think this movie is WAY overlooked. It's a classic! As a smoker myself, I find it hilarious and ironic....the town goes to all the trouble of quitting smoking for 30 days in order to win $25 million from a tobacco company, only to attract a government missile factory to town that spews "legal" smoke all over the place. It also shows smokers as the regular, NON-trash people they were/are - and THAT's refreshing, at least to me. It's a hoot - the characters are great - and I watch my old, worn out VHS version with bad sound over and over again.

Still laughing at this classic comedy after all these years. The "Red Scare" in this little New England village is brilliantly portrayed by wonderful actors. So glad it is part of our collection. Good way to diffuse stress.

VHS : Born Yesterday
Hollywood magic, they just don't make em like this anymore. Born Yesterday made an overnight star of Judy Holliday, when 3 days before the Broadway opening, Jean Arthur dropped out due to illness, and Holliday, on a diet of coffee and cigarettes, learned and opened in the role to rapturous reviews. The rest is history, Katherine Hepburn brought her out to Hollywood to appear in Adam's Rib, and she was a star. She did win the Oscar for re-creating her Born Yesterday role on film. And an Oscar winning role it sure is, every gesture, nuance and expression, are dead on. Holliday was brilliant at playing the dumb blonde when in reality she was anything but...she was actually extremely educated and I've heard rumors that she was a member of Mensa. True or not, she was an amazingly gifted performer! Sadly she passed away from cancer ... Read More
