I was under the impression that "Wings of Desire" was a unique love story and I guess it is. However that aspect of the film was almost a distraction compared to the real nature of the movie. For me, "Wings of Desire" is a brilliant cinematic concept of angels in the world around us. If that sounds overly religious or unappealling, hold on. The way director Wim Wenders brings his vision to life is the essential beauty of this movie. We almost get the impression that these angels punch in and punch out. They are sincere and they do what they can to help whenever they see the appropriate opportunity. However, they are angels; not God. We see efforts that succeed and efforts that fail and we realize that these angels can influence but not prevent. We see, through their eyes, the beautiful ... Read More

"October 1918" is the date for this story. German soldiers are planting explosives to destroy the advancing British soldiers when they occupy a French city. The townspeople hurriedly evacuate the town. The British are warned, they will not march into town. Instead Private Plumpick [some pun?] will be sent in to scout the town and defuse the bombs - by himself! [Believable?] Discovered by the Germans, he flees into a building for refuge and safety; it is the local insane asylum. The result of the German withdrawal is the inmates can wander freely into the deserted town and select new clothes from the abandoned homes. [This slow-paced action doesn't seem too funny to me.] Comedy is in part cultural, and attitudes change. Perhaps the humor is in suggesting the clothes make the man or woman? Or what looks ... VHS : The Red Balloon
basic, basic plot: Boy meets balloon. Boy and balloon hang out around Paris, despite others' efforts to separate them.

I had put off seeing this because it sounded hilariously boring. (In fact, I believe that the old tv show "The Critic" had this movie as part of some kind of joke, insisting that it was the eponymous critic's favorite movie to exemplify his pomposity.) I wound up watching it the other day late at night because it was short and I wouldn't stay up...and was definitely wide awake afterwards. I won't go into too much detail about what happens in the film because it's so short, but I will say that I found it very enjoyable and I will watch it again sometime to get a better look at the effects used in giving the balloon personality, as well as the final scene. I'd say that the last ... Read More

I saw this when it was first shown on US television in about 1975 and was amazed by the storyline and the acting. I had seen Chamberlain in his TV series, but this film allowed him a vast range of emotions and exercises which the Tv show did not. I had not read the novel then, of course.

Relatively, this is the video version people should watch. I videotaped it a couple of times (once the result was not so great) and watch it sporadically since. The book I read in 1989 on a commuter train between Sunnyvale and San Carlos - commuter trains are great for reading! The many opinions about the relative merits of the book vis a vis this excellent film are true, BUT, given the time limitations of the film format, details have to be dropped. Oh, yeah, one of the days when I was reading the book three young ... Read More

6.Latcho Drom starring: La Caita

VHS : Latcho Drom
Latcho Drom is mesmerizing, the people magical and the music unforgettable.

There is no dialogue, but this does nothing to detract from the film's integrity or entertainment value. Although Rom diaspora has resulted in the Roma living in just about every country on earth, Latcho Drom provides the viewer with a coup d'oeil of the Roma people in Africa, Egypt, Turkey, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, France and Spain.

The Romanian Roma (the two are mutually exclusive), instantly pulled me under their spell. Upon first impression, the Romanian "gypsies" might look like a ragtag band of amateurs. In short order, however, this misconception is swiftly dispelled as these musical maestros fill the air with their art - all deftly orchestrated and delivered.

The women of the Romanian ... Read More

There is something so beautiful about this movie, and yet I find it hard to explain. I try to recall this movie whenever I run into someone I can not find redeemable. Sometimes you can only focus on the bad, and sometimes you only focus on the good, and sometimes you discover the middle.

Victor Joseph and his friend Thomas are taking a road trip. Thomas and Victor are on their way to pay their last respects to Victor's dad who was living in Phoenix. Victor needs some financial assistance and Thomas is willing to help so long as he can go with. Victor needs to come to grips with his past, how he feels about his father who has passed away and he hasn't seen in 10 years, he needs to stop living with a mask on. Thomas seems terribly annoying, but it's Thomas recollections of everything good that help Victor see ... Read More

Can it be that the only DVD edition of this is for non-US countries? I think this film is brilliant. From start to finish, it showed the impact that one person can have with determination. It is a film in my library I watch at least once a year. What a crime to not have a DVD edition!
