How lucky we are to have this wonder available, as copyright problems have kept it out of European cimenas for decades. If there has ever been a better film, I haven't seen it. It rings as true now as when I saw it as a student in Paris in the seventies. Yes, the pathos is milked for all it is worth, but the acting is glorious, and it seems as if the circus hasn't left town yet. Enjoy. John Bald

VHS : Kinski: My Best Fiend
Absolutely hilarious... Though you do wish the documentary was a bit more balanced. Kinski may well have been the ultimate nightmare actor, but director Herzog drove his crews and actors to extremes that would drive anyone crazy. Still this is a surprisingly fun documentary about an egotistical actor, who inspired even the most gentle, simple tribal people who met him (during the filming of Fitzcaraldo and Aguirre: Wrath of God) to kill him. Would make a great triple bill with the documentaries of the productions of Coppola's "Apocalypse Now" and Gilliam's ill-fated Don Quixote project.

VHS : Triumph of the Will
Triumph of the Will is an absolutley stunning photographic masterpiece. Bearing in mind it was made nearly 80 years ago, Leni Riefenstahl's photgraphic techniques are nothing short of brilliant. It was very interesting to note that many of Adolf Hitler's speeches were fairly bland, but the way he put it over was quite outstanding. In places it nearly had me up on my feet with my arm in the air! It shows how he was able to captivate millions with the power of his oratory.

I have watched this film twice. What doesn't seize to surprise me is the soundtrack of it all. It may seem to be lacking music for the most part but I wish I had a recording of the sound of this film exactly as it is, it has a rythm that is hard for me to explain. I also enjoyed the many levels of good storytelling it has.

6.O Amor Natural directed by: Heddy Honigmann

VHS : O Amor Natural
Hedy Honigmann is one of my favorite documentary makers. From an interview with her I destilled one of my life mottoes: 'Cynicism is deadly'. With this film, which I went to see with my grandmother, at the time in her late eighties but as bubbly and candid as the Brazilian oldtimers in the film, Honigmann introduced me to the writings of Carlos Drummond d'Andrade, and I'm thankful to her. I wish I could get the film on DVD now, but alas. Also the poems are not widely available. In Portugese, if you're lucky. In English? Haven't found them, though several occasions I would have liked to share them. In Dutch, when the film came out, brilliantly translated by Pessoa-translator August Willemsen. But, sadly, now not in print and hardly available second hand, as no-one who has them seems to want to part with them. ... Read More

7.I Was Stalin's Bodyguard directed by: Semyon Aranovich

VHS : I Was Stalin's Bodyguard
Get this tape, but don't expect anything startling. The aged ex-bodyguard is careful to speak only about silly stuff: Stalin catching a worker taking a bath in his private bath house, Stalin giving lifts in his limousine to people standing at a bus stop, etc. Occassionally the mask drops, as when the old man refers to managing a string of Moscow informants. Then his eyes turn steely, which fifty years before must have been bone-chilling. The tape ends with him teaching his accordion technique to a gaggle of gradeschool children. Bizarre.

VHS : Tango: Our Dance
Finaly a documentry with real danced Argentine tango with normal people, realy improvising on the music. Not everything I like in this video, there is a part with Ballroom tango and a choreographed dance (orgenised by an american program for latino's) that misses the point, but I like realy the end, a ballet , but it is beatifully danced in real Tango stile, that means heavy, down to the ground.

10.Mein Krieg starring: Erich von Manstein

VHS : Mein Krieg
I believe that McNamara is wrong about what the gentlemen is describing. McNamara states that the old soldier is describing the journey to the front before the invasion of Poland. My take on it is that the old soldier is describing the move to the front through Poland and to the assembly positions for the invasion of Russia in 1941.

No serious student of WWII can be without this film. Unless you know exactly where Vitebsk is and when the Germans first captured it, you won't know exactly what the old soldiers are talking about.

I lived in Germany during the 1990's for several years. I met a few old German soldiers who fought in WWII. Their stories are very much like the stories told by the men in Mein Krieg.
