Surprisingly, this middle aged boys' weekend-out is much more sexy than many pure-porno movies, but a bit boring for stupidity of a realm screened.

WEEK-END

Jean-Luc Godard's WEEK-END is certainly beyond the usual egocentrism of Nouvelle Vague (New Wave) movies. In other terms, while the formers (including his BREATHLESS) deal with personal characteristic themes, WEEK-END is dominated by philosophical, cultural, social, and geopolitical themes. It's a franc satire of the Parisian upper-class but more importantly it's a dark view of the modern civilization's self decay, materialism, apathy, terrorism, and violence. And though the movie has the protagonists -like most nouvelle vague- as "anti-heroes", it's more adequately classified as a post-modern work, approaching very similar (if not the same) territories explored mainly by Bergman (movies like Shame, Passion of Anna) and to a lesser width in Antonioni's trilogy in that same ... VHS : Man Bites Dog
Mockumentary's are often hilarious exaggerations of human obsessions presented in a way that makes us laugh at ourselves and our own pathetic indulgences. Wonderful films like `Best in Show' or `Drop Dead Gorgeous' are magnificent examples of exploitation of harmless activities that we as a culture take too seriously.

`C'est Arrive Pres de Chez Vous' (translated `It Happened in Your Neighborhood' yet strangely named `Man Bites Dog') does not fit into that mold.

On the outset this film is laced with a black comedy both intriguing and inviting, yet the end result is one of repulsion and guilt. `C'est Arrive Pres de Chez Vous' strikes a nerve because it's not merely exposing harmless guilty pleasures; it is calling out our society's sick attraction to violence and suffering. It's ... Read More

VHS : Lone Wolf and Cub - Sword of Vengeance
The comic series Lone Wolf and Cub is one of the most epic, action packed, and respected series of all time. It's influenced many artists and writers, while at the same time been copied by countless people who overdo it more often than not. It quickly got a few movies due to its success, and did fairly well, though there's a lot of criticism that the later installments tried to one-up the first couple volumes (I'll see about that soon enough). But there are still a lot of people unfamiliar with Lone Wolf and Cub, by that name at least. If you mention Shogun Assassin around more mainstream samurai movie fans, they're sure to know exactly what you're talking about. Shogun Assassin was a movie composed of the first two Lone Wolf and Cub movies, edited together to appear as one movie. And the thing is, it worked pretty well. ... Read More

VHS : Alphaville
The action in Alphaville is set in a future where everything is run by the big computer Alpha 60. It's hard to take this film seriously, the futuristic vision is very 1960s: the fear of a computerized society where machines rule with cold rationality and so on. As an example of this vision it is interesting. But Godard doesn't elaborate this future society very much so it is never especially "believable" or consistent. It is more like a playful attempt to make a budget sci-fi: the special effects are restricted to blinking neon signs and close-ups of radios and stuff. A theme is the relation between logic and poetry, the latter is of course beyond the comprehension of the computer... I liked the impersonation of Alpha 60: a close-up of a light and/or a fan plus a weird voice talking about logic and stuff. Sort of a brother of HAL from 2001: A Space ... Read More

Good movies for people who like viewing nudity, rape, torture, and bloody violence. My wife could not watch much of it, but Shintaro Katsu is our favorite as the blind swordsman.

VHS : Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky
Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky is a truly bizarre film. It's a hybrid exploitation film combining the prison movie, the martial arts movie, and the gore-fest. Oh yeah, and with supervillains that somehow have magical powers. There's some hilarious over-acting, plenty of terrible dialogue, and at least a couple totally illogical twists. Basically, it's everything you want in an exploitation flick.

The big question with exploitation is always about the 'fun' factor. There are the "so bad it's good" movies that continually amuse us with their utter ineptitude such as "Plan Nine from Outer Space", and then there are movies that are just bad - not funny, not campy, but merely boring. The latter is usually found in huge collections called things like "Grind House Cinema Collection! 50 Movies on 3 DVDs!" Riki-Oh is clearly the former. It's amusing from start ... Read More
