VHS : Freaks (1932)
Growing up, I never thought I was very attractive. I spent too much time complaining about my physical imperfections. I wish someone had shown me the classic horror film, "Freaks." Seeing the unfortunate humans, known as "circus freaks," who suffered from birth defects made me appreciate that I had arms and legs. My heart broke for them. It is sad to think that people would abuse and exploit other humans simply because they are handicapped.

Todd Browning, who directed 1931`s "Dracula," also directed this horror masterpiece which used real life "circus freaks" as actors. Hans, a German midget, falls in love with a beautiful trapeze artist, Cleopatra. Cleopatra pretends to love Hans while she and her secret lover, strongman Hercules, plan to kill him for his riches. ... Read More

VHS : Bad Taste
This movie is pretty much tongue in cheek sci fi.
Jack in the golden arches from outer space wants to Kentucky fry
humans. The aliens seem unstoppable after butchering a small
New Zealand town. To the rescue is an odd team of young commandos.
The rest is a shoot out between the heroes and the invaders.
As bad as the dialog and special effects are
the comedy touches kind of make up for it.
I just don't much like horror movies...

VHS : Fly (1950)
The best laid plans of mice and men, not to mention flies.

This is first rate science fiction, but of a heart-wrenching variety.

This story is a bit in the spirit of Jack London tales, where some spirited individual gets crushed (in this case, literally), by going out too far on his own.

In this case the spirited individual is a family man who happens to be a scientific genius, developing in his basement the first matter teleportation device. It works, but he fails to realize that the wilderness he confronts in it is not as user friendly as his wife and kid. It confuses him with a fly (which was in the disintegrator with him but escaping his notice). In other words he escapes nature's notice, which didn't bother to distinguish him from the fly, treating him ... Read More

VHS : Night of the Living Dead -- Collector's Edition
This is an excellent edition of Night of the living dead because of the extras. It contains interviews with the living cast members except for Judith Ridley who played Judy.It was nice to see Barbra and Johnny back in the cemetary 40 years later.Unfortunately Duane Jones(Ben),Karl Hardman(Mr.Cooper)and Keith Wayne(Tom)are no longer with us.May they rest in peace! But it was nice to see the others talk about this classic movie! This will always be George Romero's one and only masterpiece!!The film quality is excellent considering all the bad copies of this movie out there. I will always be a loyal fan of this film and it will always remain my favorite.

VHS : Island of Lost Souls
I can only guess. It's not released due to hints of beastiality in the movie Island of Lost Souls??? IF so that's just rubbish.

Island of Lost Souls is a great, classic Friday night B&W horror flick that no collection should be without. Period. But we are forced to have a VHS or cheap bootleg. Mystery Of the Wax Museum is hardly a point of discussion here, a nice to have, but Island is a MUST HAVE!

Here is exactly what we need in a collection:
Island Of Lost Souls
Murders In The Zoo
House Of Horrors
The Mad Ghoul

Now how cool of a collection would that be???

HELLO Universal!!! Anyone home??

VHS : The Exorcist (The Version You've Never Seen)
It's difficult to look back on a film "classic" and try to review it through today's eyes...35 years later. It's always tempting to say, "Those effects were great...for 1973" or "imagine how that affected an audience...three decades ago." You almost feel like you have to make excuses for the film.

But I am happy to report that in a very recent, pre-Halloween viewing, THE EXORCIST has withstood the test of time nearly unscathed. Yes, some of the effects (there are actually fewer than you would expect) are not up to the standards of today. The clothing is often hilariously tacky. Technology is primitive.

Yet William Friedkin's classically styled direction of William Peter Blatty's effectively unsettling novel still has the uncanny ability to give us the creeps today. Often (VERY often) imitated, but not ... Read More

I rented this film and Truffault's Day for Night one night, and showed them to a love interest of mine at the time. I showed her Day for Night, which she absolutely hated and despised (despite the fact it was a dubbed, pan and scan version, so she couldn't have used the "subtitled/letterbox" excuse many use). She stopped calling me after that. I wished I had shown her The Devils, as it would have warped her fragile, little mind and stayed in her subconscious for the rest of her life. It would have become a permanent parasite, popping up occasionally and messing with her brain when she least expected it. This is one of Ken Russell's most amazing, outrageous, and thought provoking/brain melting films. It is arguably his best work, where the frenzy and mania reach dizzying heights. It is not a work where there are a few amazing scenes ... Read More

VHS : Friday the 13th 1
Authenticity, creativity, style, and a spine-chilling sensation are some of the most compelling characteristics that make for a truly impressive horror film. Unfortunately, "Friday the 13th" does not even remotely approach those characteristics. This movie is an absolute atrocity that suffers from a variety of unforgivable flaws.

The opening scene takes place in the year 1958 at a summer campsite where a group of teenage camp counselors are enjoying a nice, quiet evening by the campfire. Two of the counselors are brutally murdered by an unknown character after attempting to slip away and make love. Following this incident, the movie fast forwards to the present. The current owner of the campsite, Steve Christy (Peter Brouwer), decides to revive the campsite for the summer with the assistance of some teenagers. Unbeknownst to them, ... Read More

VHS : Flesh for Frankenstein (Andy Warhol's Frankenstein)
"To know death, you have to f@#k life in the gall bladder".

That pretty much sums up this gory cult classic freak show. There are plenty of lush sets, beautiful music, zany atmosphere, corpses getting fondled, over-the-top bloody decapitations, scoring with the digestive system, and a little full frontal.

Udo Kier stars as The Baron, the eccentric mad scientist with a pension for dead poo-tang. He assembles lifeless parts and pieces together his two perfect lifeforms. Ultimately, his diabolical plans are to create the perfect genetic offspring and live freakily ever after.

This is a weird monster movie satire with some really good f/x. Reminded me of The Evil Dead. The blood flows like wine and there's a few chunks of cheese to go with it. Plus enough nudity to make you feel all cheap and sleazy. Good times!
