"October 1918" is the date for this story. German soldiers are planting explosives to destroy the advancing British soldiers when they occupy a French city. The townspeople hurriedly evacuate the town. The British are warned, they will not march into town. Instead Private Plumpick [some pun?] will be sent in to scout the town and defuse the bombs - by himself! [Believable?] Discovered by the Germans, he flees into a building for refuge and safety; it is the local insane asylum. The result of the German withdrawal is the inmates can wander freely into the deserted town and select new clothes from the abandoned homes. [This slow-paced action doesn't seem too funny to me.] Comedy is in part cultural, and attitudes change. Perhaps the humor is in suggesting the clothes make the man or woman? Or ... Read More

DOLLS!!! What may have been at the time of release "shocking" dialogue is why Valley of the Dolls will live in infamy. "Well Broad-way doesn't go for booozze and pills." Helen Larson tells Neeley O'Hara at the start of their catfight in the powder room. Great fun to watch with your best Gay friends. Great extras included. Packaging is well done and comes with lobby cards.

Having read many of the worst reviews, I can fully appreciate where the kids are "coming from". They don't really get it because it was too full of the symbols of the time in which the film was shot. It is obviously not a piece of timeless art intended for future generations. It was for that time and it accomplished its goal, which was to wake up a new generation to the possibilities of life. Choices. the music was current and dynamic and added to the power. Unless you are old enough, or have submerged yourself in the period, I would not expect you to enjoy it. If Woodstock The Movie, or The Last Waltz have meaning for you, you'll probably get something from it. Otherwise, just assume that you don't get it because YOU HAD TO BE THERE. Film classes might be able to put into context for you.

Recently watching Badlands for the second time, I was less impressed than after the original viewing. But I figure enough people have given their reasons for liking or not liking the movie, so instead I'll throw out a couple thoughts upon watching it. For one, the couple is never in the actual Badlands of the Dakotas. They spend all their time on the Plains, unless I'm mistaken, whether it's the town they first live in, their holdout by the river, or their drive through the flat landscape. Badlands may be a purely metaphorical title, but the movie is actually set in a landscape more like that of Days of Heaven, if I'm remembering that movie right.

Also, I was struck by the plight of Kit's fellow trash collector, who's probably heard about Kit's mayhem, and is stuck on this isolated ranch house when he ... Read More

follow along on a 2.5 hour trip through the mind of Lynch, who enjoys being strange just to be strange. why are we subjected to the first half hour of nonsense?

As a fan of the TV series I enjoyed seeing a much darker side of LeLand Palmer then we saw in the TV series. Ray Wise delivers a strong performance. Sorry not to see Lara Flynn Boyle as Donna, her replacement was not even close.

This was an independent movie which was visually beautiful but a bit hard for me to understand. It was one of the beautiful River Phoenix's last roles and he was so great in the character, almost too natural and brilliant.

VHS : Bad Lieutenant
This is one of the most notorious films of the 1990's, a really stunning piece of filmmaking. It's Abel Ferrara's best film, one of Keitel's most powerful, shocking performances, and a film that despite the intensely visceral, borderline sleazy material, manages somehow to be spiritual and transcendent by the end.

Keitel is a cop with no name (he's never referred by anything other than Lieutenant) who is corrupt to the bone. He's a junkie, a gambler, an alcoholic, and hangs out with hookers. He also "verbally assaults" school girls (this is probably the most uncomfortable scene in the film), and doesn't have any moral center. He's a completely amoral character. Yet, during an investigation of a brutal, unflinching rape of a nun, he somehow finds his soul again.

Abel Ferrara is a wildly uneven filmmaker. ... Read More
