Big Bad Mama is the archetypal Roger Corman 70s b-movie, with the monsters and sci-fi of the 50s and 60s replaced by plentiful low-budget action, tongue-in-cheek humor and mandatory nudity from almost every actress in the cast in a fast-moving Depression-era backroads gangster flick. Angie Dickinson is the Ma Barker figure tryin' to do right by her two gals, stumbling her way from bootlegging to armed robbery to kidnapping with the aid of Tom Skerritt's bank robber and William Shatner's Southern conman (unfortunately the mandatory nudity rule also applies to him, though we are spared the sight of the captain's log). While not as smart as John Sayles' and Jonathan Demme's Corman flicks there are occasional nods to history - not least the resistance of hypocritical establishment figures and the ... Read More

What is the question that will forever be the Dolemite aficionado. A burning question guranteed to forever split both sides of the debate.[No, its not that serious] Just which Dolemite movies are better than the other. Is it Dolemite or the Human Tornado? For me it was the Dolemite over the Human Tornado. The Humando tornado starts off as a F5 but by the closing credits it whimpers into a FO. What hinders the film is both sluggish pace and lack of funny lines from Rudy Ray Moore. The films does have some interesting material[such as the Mrs. Cavaletti scene and car chase] but it just comes off as too soft and slow. Let's not forget the fact it lacks the defining role of our favoriet character--the Hamburger Pimp!!!!

Dolemite's homeboys are just not funny. The three friends and ... Read More

At times, you don't know exactly how silly this is supposed to be, and the whole film has a tone of naivety in spite of its run of sex and violence (with drug addiction thrown in for good measure). The plot couldn't be more simple: a group of women in prison, led by the resourceful Collier (top-billed Judy Brown), plan an escape. Inside snitch Grear (Pam Grier in her first speaking film role) slips information back and forth to the guards and the evil warden, Ms. Dietrich (a hilarious Christiane Schmidtmer, best remembered for The Giant Spider Invasion), in order to get smack for her lesbian lover cellmate. Guards torment and molest prisoners. Prisoners get naked (though not as much as you'd expect for this genre). One evil head guard, Lucian (Kathryn Lodern, the quasi-Bette Davis villainess from Foxy ... Read More

Having read many of the worst reviews, I can fully appreciate where the kids are "coming from". They don't really get it because it was too full of the symbols of the time in which the film was shot. It is obviously not a piece of timeless art intended for future generations. It was for that time and it accomplished its goal, which was to wake up a new generation to the possibilities of life. Choices. the music was current and dynamic and added to the power. Unless you are old enough, or have submerged yourself in the period, I would not expect you to enjoy it. If Woodstock The Movie, or The Last Waltz have meaning for you, you'll probably get something from it. Otherwise, just assume that you don't get it because YOU HAD TO BE THERE. Film classes might be able to put into context for you.

If you're tired of Speilburg's blantant attempts to wring emotions from the tendons of your soul, then this movie is like a soothing balm to your weary, weather-beaten lips. While various other films strive to be genuine and well-made, this one does not even need to: every bit of action, every facial expression, every bit of dialogue speaks from the heart--or at least the spleen. Bruce Campbell is brilliant in this epic tale of heartbreak and intrigue. Not for the whole family, definitely not appropriate to show at Cousin Betty's wedding, this movie is one that at least the committed Sam Raimi-Bruce Campbell fans can enjoy. Hail to the king, baby.

This is such a great movie. It has the look of Batman and Batman Returns, and has the feel of all the gothic literature/films that have been seen. Brandon Lee's (sadly) final performance is a treat: he is the one and only "Eric Draven", and all the others are just copycats of him. Pacing and direction of this film is compelling, while the wicked art direction stands out. Action sequences are a must-see, and the script is purely well-written. ***** out of *****.

My husband loves this movie. Any NASCAR or race fan should watch this. Kind of quirky but I think that's what he loves about it.It's in his top 5 favorites.

I suppose I'm lucky I hadn't read this in book form prior to seeing it on HBO in the 70's. My daughter and I must have watched it 10 times. It is crazy-fun, whacky, so silly and charming, yet dark - Clockwork Orangeish mixed with Dr. Strangelove but not. Michael Moorcock is one of my favorite sci fi authors and this film (though I gather he hates) really captures how funny he is in the most unexpected of ways. If you love the odd, get it.

Yeah it's low budget and yeah it doesn't have quite the novelty factor of the original since this is a sequel BUT taken on it's own terms this flick delivers fun shoot em up entertainment, sex appeal, humor, and even social commentary. I can't watch the first without wanting to check this one out. I noticed this got a bad review for not being porn. Go elsewhere if that's all you care for. There's nudity here though and it's very pleasant to behold. This IS what I was looking for: an enjoyable cult movie. Julie is so sweet! I adored her in this role. Danielle is sultry and perfect in her role too. Once again Angie is FANTASTIC in the role she made a cult classic in the first film. Culp is great. Hell the whole cast of this is great. Far better than it should have been if you bring your sense of humor and fun along ... Read More
