VHS : Life Is Beautiful
Life is indeed beautiful and this wonderful movie by Roberto Begnini makes us stop to think about it, to admire it, to enjoy it, to love it, to come to the conclusion that, no matter how hard it is sometimes, it's always worth it! From my point of view, the core message of this masterpiece is the selfless love. Whenever we feel this kind of love, we will see that nothing else matters. We will have accomplished the highest goal a human being can be assigned to. That's also GOD's message for us and, amidst laughter, smiles, humor and tenderness, Roberto Begnini leads our thoughts to same conclusion. Watch it because you won't regret!

If your parents or grandparents emigrated to the USA from Czechoslovakia, you will want to see this movie. It gives you a good picture of life in a small slovak village. Although the theme is about treatment of the Jewish population during the Nazi Occupation, the film gives you a good picture of how our Slovak ancestors lived their lives in the 1940's.

I too think this is a wonderfu, funny, offbeat and weird movie that should be available on DVD. A great, friendly satire on some obvious Jewish stereotyes, and some not so obvious, which viewers who are not Jewish might miss. I'm buying this movie for the third time now. I keep loaning it to rabbi's who tell me how much they enjoyed the movie, but never give it back.

Are you only a fan of escapist fiction? If so, this movie is DEFINITELY NOT for you. That is a fact. I like escapist fiction, butvI also like films and literature filled with lush poetry, subtle verve, dreamy nostalgia, and serene visuals. This movie qualifies. No action. No slam, bang, pow. This movie instead focuses on the quiet aching that comes with unrequited love, haughty isolationism, passive acceptance and submission. The war, facism, the holocaust, all are covered to a degree without immersing themselves too deeply for the viewer to feel trapped. *sigh*

All in all, this movie is very quiet. I have watched this movie dozens of times, and I have fallen asleep during this movie almost as many times as I watched it. In fact, this is a great cure for insomnia. Now that is not my way ... Read More

LEFT LUGGAGE, an English speaking Netherlands film, was a tremendous film festival traveler, and is known worldwide under nine very different titles. The U.S. release refers to the luggage that Chaja's Father had buried in Antwerp,Belgium when the Nazi onslaught hit Belgium. The film then symbolically refers to the baggage that is left in the lives of the people who endured and survived the Holocaust and the legacy that is put upon the next generation.I have seen this script done countless times and far more effectively!
1972 Antwerp has Chaja (Scotland's Laura Fraser-Virtual Sexuality)as the daughter of two non-religious Jewish Holocaust survivors. Her Father cannot let go of the past, and her Mother refuses to acknowledge it.Chaja's Jewish identity has never been of any real significance to her.She ... Read More

VHS : Solomon & Gaenor
This was a sad yet beautiful movie. Yes, there were sex scenes but it was tastefully done. The end has a surprise twist....that's all I will say on that because I don't want to spoil the movie. Ioan Gruffudd did a an excellent job portraying Solomon and Nia Roberts did an okay job an Gaenor. Of course there was hypocrisy, judgmental behavior and the like in this movie but that's the way it was then and any movie set in that time period is going to have those elements. The storyline was a bit predictable but that is not the end of the world.

VHS : Jew Boy Levi
This is a well-acted, poignant film, though I'm not convinced that it is an authentic portrayal. It seems to say that the vulnerable country folk are manipulated by the intrusive Nazi menace, destroying the formerly pleasant relations they had with the Jew, Levi. But Germany, like most of Europe has a savage and repetitive history of anti-semitism that preceded the Nazis by hundreds of years. Ostracism and violence against Jews were not unusual, they were only more overt at some times than others. So, would Levi have felt so apparently confident in his dealings with the villagers? The director perhaps assumes that viewers will have a familiarity with European anti-semitism that most do not.

There were several favorable reviews from fellow Amazonians regarding THE GOVERNESS, and it was recommended by the dear hearts at Amazon, so I took a shot in the dark on this one.

The lushness of the Isle of Skye is absolutely breathtaking (great direction w/the sweeping camera shots), while you can feel the grittiness and urban setting of Victorian London (the "ladies of the night" egging Rosina on is a particularly standout moment). Minnie Driver's portrayal of Rosina da Silva is fragile, yet strong, curious, yet introverted when it comes to opening up to her charge, Clementina. She only seems to "blossom" fully when the master of the house Mr. Cavendish begins to lavish a *ahem* special attention upon her.

The viewer never really understands WHY Rosina is so enthralled with a man who is ... Read More
