VHS : Wise Blood
This great, unjustly forgotten John Huston film has fallen by the wayside, and that's a real shame. A striking cinematic adaptation of the Flannery O'Connor novel, Wise Blood boasts Brad Dourif in the lead role, Hazel Motes, and Dourif nails it. When you see the film, you realize it would be really tough to imagine anyone else alive at the time being able to carry off the role. Harry Dean Stanton, as usual, adds his terrific skills as the "blind" preacher Asa Hawkes, and Ned Beatty is also along for the ride as singing preacher Hoover Shoates.

Motes, Hawkes, and Shoates--all preachers. This is O'Connor country, and Huston himself shows up as another preacher, Hazel Motes' grandfather, who spews fire and brimstone, inculcating his grandson in the fierce and vengeful ways of the ... Read More

VHS : Jesus of Nazareth (3pc)
This video is not as biblically accurate as I was led to believe by the other reviews. I purchased this to augment my bible study teaching so I may be a little tougher on the movie then most people. Dramatic license is taken in several places because of the need to let the viewer know some of the backround as well as the portraying of the actual incidents in Jesus' life. The movie is already 6 hours long so I can understand the necessity of this but some of decisions by the producer are almost ridiculous. Young Jesus is portrayed by a young man with blue eyes, blond hair, and the whitest skin I've ever seen on someone from the middle east. All in all though, the movie has some cool parts and is worth watching. I would recommend it.

When I saw that this film was almost 150 minutes in length, I was curious to see how the film-makers expanded on a story that is only a few pages long in the book of Genesis. As it turns out, I'm kinda sorry I found out. Why? Because the story in this film bears almost no resemblance to that original story. Outside of the characters of "Lot" and his daughters, and the two cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, everything else is either seriously embellished or completely fabricated. In short, it is almost an entirely different story from the original.

Taken on its own, the movie is OK. Some of the special effects are weak, but I realize that it was made in the early 1960s and wasn't a huge budget film. The queen of Sodom, although a non-biblical figure, was played rather well by Anouk Aimee. ... Read More

I had to watch this movie in three different intervals because the movie was so boring. It was anticipating that this movie would answer some of my questions as to how Saints interact with God and why Saints feel they need to suffer to embrace the love of God. Since the movie was such a letdown, I drove over to my Library and checked out the Relectant Saint The Life of Francis if Assisi. The book is far more informative and paints a more realistic picture of St Francis. It's strange how Hollywood can make such a mess out of something so beautiful.

VHS : The Bible...In the Beginning
This is a Genesis movie that was made in the 1960's and because of this moves in the 60's movie way, it is slow for the modern audience. The dialogue seems to be half pulled from the Bible and half written for a modern audience. But that can be somewhat forgiven.

It does show Creation, Adam and Eve and the Flood. The Noah's Ark portion was my favourite, mostly because I like animals, but also because it shows the point of the story very well. I thought this was the best part of the film altogether.

The film ends with the story of Abraham and the sacrifice of Isaac, which I felt was pretty well done. The part of the Abraham story I didn't like was the portrayal of Ishmael as some evil sort of child corrupted by his mother. That seemed really unnecessary.

But, being from ... Read More

VHS : Samson & Delilah (1996) (2pc)
More biblical epic than Harlequin romance, 'Samson and Delilah' has a good look and feel. With the exception of two steamy scenes, it sticks to the good book with some decent interpretations added to the dialogue. Overlong at three hours, the camera shots and scene changes, nevertheless, keep it visually appealing. Some of the battle scenes are admirable indeed. Eric Thall and Elizabeth Hurley star in the leading roles, and while they're not Emmy or Oscar contenders, Thall's performance gathers more substance near the end of the story. Dennis Hopper's portrayal of General Tariq isn't a career best, but he ups the quality of the acting, and Michael Gambon gives proper stature to King Hanon. Solid, but not substantial.

Having been a nun during these times, I found the experiences fairly true to life. The VERY LAST scene was a heartbreaker. Very well done.

The Indian canoes escort him on the trip up the St. Lawrence River. The Indian priest is evil. The midget (spirit) is a detractor from his faith, plus the temptation to love a woman.
