VHS : Mayerling (1968)
I saw the 1968 version of Mayerling in April of 1969 at a base theater
while I was in basic training in the Air Force. I note this because the
subject of the film and its well-dressed actors and its European scenery
were so different from the military surroundings and military "dress"
which I was enduring at the time. I had not heard about the story of
Prince Rudolph and Princess Maria before. But suspected Mayerling's tragic ending from the start, but I think it did take the film a long time to reach its conclusion. However, I believe Mayerling was a visual delight and the musical score was beautiful too.
The cast was excellent with Omar Sharif and Catherine Deneuve along with
Ava Gardner and James Mason. To many the story of these tragic lovers
seemed ... Read More

VHS : The Lover
Please note: I will be giving some of the plot away.

For anyone who views this film and thinks "underage sex" and/or "porn", there are some subtleties that need to be explored.

There is no reason to believe that the Chinaman sought out underage girls. If anything, his station in Chinese royalty probably provided him with female companionship until (and perhaps after) his arranged marriage.

Through no effort on his part the schoolgirl appeared in his orbit and he found himself unable to look away. This is a rare thing to experience and it is awfully hard to resist.

If we generally only see Leung and March having sex, we need to factor in that her jailbait status and the inter-racial nature of their relationship would not have allowed them to carry on a normal courtship. ... Read More

VHS : A Cry In The Wild
While the movie wasn't nearly as good as the book, it was an excellent teaching tool for my fifth graders. Many are reluctant readers. After reading the book and viewing the movie, the book won hands down. Mission accomplished. Although the movie was somewhat of a disappointment, the service I received was excellent. If I need to purchase movies or materials for my classroom in the future, amazon.com will be one of my first stops.

VHS : Breaking the Waves
Set in a remote, repressed, and deeply-religious community in the 1970s Scottish Highlands, Danish film director Lars von Trier's film, Breaking the Waves (1996), chronicles the unusual relationship between Bess McNeill (Emily Watson) and her husband, Jan (Stellan Skarsgård). The film is the first in von Trier's "Golden Heart Trilogy," which also includes The Idiots (1998) and Dancer in the Dark (2000). Bess talks to God. After Jan is paralyzed from the neck down in an oil-rigging accident, she believes that it is God's will that she engage in sex with other men so that she may then share all of the details with Jan. She is further convinced that the more deviant she becomes in her sexual behaviour, the more likely it will be that God will heal Jan. The mesmerising film shows von Trier's realist Dogme 95 influences: hand ... Read More

VHS : A Man and a Woman--20 Years Later
A Man and a Woman: 20 Years Later/ Un Homme et Une Femme: Vingt Ans Déjà is one of those forgotten belated sequels, and generally hated by those who do remember it. The budget is bigger, the plot more expansive, the relationships less tentative, the stunt driving more spectacular and this time the whole film is not only in color but CinemaScope as well, so on the surface the film only has the characters to really link it to the original, although even they've moved on in life. Aimee's character has become a film producer and, in the wake of a disastrous super-production set during the liberation of Paris that looks like outtakes from Lelouch's own Les Uns et Les Autres/Bolero, has the idea of revisiting her almost love-story in much the same way that after the disaster of Les Grands Moments Lelouch hurriedly produced the original ... Average Rating: out of 5 stars

VHS : Five Miles To Midnight
Don't you love Anthony Perkins? He's at his very best in FIVE MILES TO MIDNIGHT, a suspense thriller from the last days of JFK's administration. He's teamed with his perdurable co-star Sophia Loren, the tasty Italian import whom Tony first met as they played country bumpkins in a ludicrous adaptation of Eugene O'Neill's DESIRE UNDER THE ELMS. Here Sophia is playing a European woman, which is all to the good, who somehow gets entangled with a mixed up American vet, sort of like Howard Hughes, played by Tony Perkins. What Sophia Loren doesn't realize is that her husband is crazy, abusive and violent!

Another 25 years later they re-did this movie with Julia Roberts playing the abused wife who fakes her own death to escape from a savage hubby. Here PERKINS fakes his own death to avoid financial ruin and also, it seems, to be ... Read More

I really like this "quirky" off-beat film. It has a kind of "English" dry humor to it. If you liked "The hitch-hikers guide to the galaxy" you will like this film too. I liked this film enough to buy and send my mother a copy.
