I saw the 1968 version of Mayerling in April of 1969 at a base theater while I was in basic training in the Air Force. I note this because the subject of the film and its well-dressed actors and its European scenery were so different from the military surroundings and military "dress" which I was enduring at the time. I had not heard about the story of Prince Rudolph and Princess Maria before. But suspected Mayerling's tragic ending from the start, but I think it did take the film a long time to reach its conclusion. However, I believe Mayerling was a visual delight and the musical score was beautiful too. The cast was excellent with Omar Sharif and Catherine Deneuve along with Ava Gardner and James Mason. Please note: I will be giving some of the plot away. For anyone who views this film and thinks "underage sex" and/or "porn", there are some subtleties that need to be explored. There is no reason to believe that the Chinaman sought out underage girls. If anything, his station in Chinese royalty probably provided him with female companionship until (and perhaps after) his arranged marriage. Through no effort on his part the schoolgirl appeared in his orbit and he found himself unable to look away. This is a rare thing to experience and it is awfully hard to resist. If we generally only see Leung and March having sex, we need to factor in that her jailbait status and the inter-racial nature of their relationship would not have allowed them to carry on a normal courtship. ... While the movie wasn't nearly as good as the book, it was an excellent teaching tool for my fifth graders. Many are reluctant readers. After reading the book and viewing the movie, the book won hands down. Mission accomplished. Although the movie was somewhat of a disappointment, the service I received was excellent. If I need to purchase movies or materials for my classroom in the future, amazon.com will be one of my first stops.
