VHS : Treasure Island (1990)
This is indeed the very best film version of Robert Louis Stevenson's definitive pirate adventure ever made. Christian Bale plays the young Jim Hawkins and Charlton Heston is Long John Silver, and both are excellent. Add Christopher Lee as Blind Pew and the rest of a terrific cast including Oliver Reed, Clive Wood, and Julian Glover among the many actors that bring the story to life. Filmed on location in Jamaica and on the awesome ship Hispaniola, the scenery and cinematography are marvelous.

And the soundtrack is performed by The Cheiftains!
It is the best pirate soundtrack ever, adding great drama and realism to the proceedings, since the music seems so timely for the period.

Heston's Long John Silver is sensational, and his son Fraser's direction is ... Read More

I saw this when it was first shown on US television in about 1975 and was amazed by the storyline and the acting. I had seen Chamberlain in his TV series, but this film allowed him a vast range of emotions and exercises which the Tv show did not. I had not read the novel then, of course.

Relatively, this is the video version people should watch. I videotaped it a couple of times (once the result was not so great) and watch it sporadically since. The book I read in 1989 on a commuter train between Sunnyvale and San Carlos - commuter trains are great for reading! The many opinions about the relative merits of the book vis a vis this excellent film are true, BUT, given the time limitations of the film format, details have to be dropped. Oh, yeah, one of the days when I was reading ... Read More

VHS : Ivanhoe (1982)
I am so SAD about having to say negative things about this film. I'm a devout disciple of Ivanhoe, and a mesmerized fan of Anthony Andrews, so it feels like treachery to say that I've never been so disappointed in a film...What a CAST. But such meaningless drivel for dialog... True, this version DID include Athelstane, but to what purpose? He added nothing, he was totally incidental---well, blast it, WILFRED was incidental...And, bless her heart, that cute little girl didn't look remotely Saxon...And lovely Olivia looks more as if she's distressed and confused by the quality of the production than by deep love for Wilfred or impending immolation...By the time they tie her to the stake, she looks like she just wants out under any circumstance. I BELIEVED Elizabeth Taylor in the old version ... Read More

I know this great movie from way back. I have ordered it, but it did not arrive. I wish still to get it, and if this review has any influence, maybe it still can be organised to get it. Surely someone has it. It is totally unavailable here in Australia. The same with "The Yellow Rolls Royce"

VHS : Time Machine (1960)
Everyone has his/hers favorite movie, but The Time Machine has to rank way up there on many people's list. Based on H.G. Wells eerily dark vision of the future, George Pal's Time Machine is science fiction at it's best. Inventor George Wells (Rod Taylor) has invited his friends over for dinner at his house. His friends are impatient, as George is late for his own dinner. George soon manages to show up, but his clothes are torn, and his body bruised. His friends sit him down, and George tells the story of what has happened to him. George reminds his friends of the meeting they had five days earlier, in which George demonstrated to them a prototype contraption he had built, which could travel in time. His friends didn't believe George, and when they left, George tested out the full version, sending himself ... Read More

VHS : The Man in The Iron Mask: Literary Masterpieces
No offence to DiCaprio but Richard Chamberlain's duel role of "The Man in the Iron Mask" was definitely better. It amazes me only foreign versions of this on DVD are available. Why not a Region 1 version? Chamberlain did three wonderful Dumas classics, this "The Count of Monte Cristo", and "The Three Musketeers". The first two are not available on Region 1 DVDs after all these years. Great movie that I highly recommend for the whole family. Let's hope someone like Criterion gets the rights for both Chamberlain's Dumas movies that aren't available and does a proper job of releasing them. If you enjoyed this catch "The Three Musketeers" and "Shogun". - C. Luster

I first saw this movie with my older brother in 1939, when it was released.
I was nine years old then and I can't count the times I'd been able to see it again and again when it would be released in the theaters over the years.
Now with modern tech. were able to see it again whenever we want.
I think this is a great movie and a beautifully filmed one also.
What else can I say?
I just love it and you will too when you see it.
