VHS : Mayerling (1968)
I saw the 1968 version of Mayerling in April of 1969 at a base theater
while I was in basic training in the Air Force. I note this because the
subject of the film and its well-dressed actors and its European scenery
were so different from the military surroundings and military "dress"
which I was enduring at the time. I had not heard about the story of
Prince Rudolph and Princess Maria before. But suspected Mayerling's tragic ending from the start, but I think it did take the film a long time to reach its conclusion. However, I believe Mayerling was a visual delight and the musical score was beautiful too.
The cast was excellent with Omar Sharif and Catherine Deneuve along with
Ava Gardner and James Mason. To many the story of these tragic lovers ... Read More

This movie is to me Andrei Konchalovsky at his very best.

One of the darkest periods of the Russian history told through the eyes of the innocent Ivan Sanshin. Communist Joseph Stalin purportedly killed millions of fellow Russians through famines, executions, deportations, and in the Gulag, most of them for political reasons. No opposition was allowed whatsoever, and Russia experienced the horrors of a blood-thirsty despotic regime with an asphyxiating cult to the "leaders'" persona.

As we see Ivan Sanshin's story develop in the movie (Tom Hulce), we can't help but wonder how many peoples along history have blindfoldedly fallen in the depths of savage and ruthless regimes?

How many more will keep falling?

We have lessons to learn from "The Inner ... Read More

I go to movies for entertainment, and unless the movie has been touted as a 100%, bona fide accurate portrayal of the subject, then I have no problem if facts are embellished. This is Ridley Scott's vision of Christopher Columbus and his quest for the New World, and he has artistic license to create his vision and in my opinion did so magnificently with this film. I never got the feeling that Columbus was made a hero by this movie. The portrayal I saw was of a deeply flawed, brilliant man who did in fact commit great wrong against the natives, and returned to Europe completely demoralized. A broken man. And enough about Depardieu's accent. I understood him most of the time and even when I didn't, I still understood at least what was going on. I thought his acting was impeccable. The character of Moxica in particular ... Read More

VHS : All the Mornings of the World (Tous les matins du monde)
I didn't realize as I watched the film the first time that it was inspired by actual lives -- Sainte-Colombe and Marin Marais are important figures in the history of music -- nor was it clear to me, until I did some research, how the film connected with important theological controversies of the 17th century. Hearing that Sainte-Colombe was "a reformer," I took that to mean that he was a Calvinist and thus was confused to see him, in a later scene, in what was clearly a Catholic church. (The film makes me want to know more about Jansenism, about which until now all I knew was that it was linked with an extreme and gloomy asceticism. Until now I hadn't thought of it as a stream of Catholicism profoundly influenced of Calvinism.)

It was striking to see how Sainte-Colombe's form of Christianity, as depicted in the ... Read More

I had to watch this movie in three different intervals because the movie was so boring. It was anticipating that this movie would answer some of my questions as to how Saints interact with God and why Saints feel they need to suffer to embrace the love of God. Since the movie was such a letdown, I drove over to my Library and checked out the Relectant Saint The Life of Francis if Assisi. The book is far more informative and paints a more realistic picture of St Francis. It's strange how Hollywood can make such a mess out of something so beautiful.

My order (movie) came very quickly and was in excellent condition!
The movie is true. It is long, but worth the time. Amy Irving is excellent as usual.

VHS : Danton
Although DANTON distills events that occurred over several months into a matter of days, this film comes very close to taking viewers back to Paris on the eve of "The Great Terror."

I have seen DANTON many times, and I am still impressed with its realism and impact. This piece is beautifully cast, although I believe Robespierre and Desmoulins were a bit slighter in build than they are portrayed.

In my own role of college teacher, I was recently asked by a colleague to recommend the best film on the Revolution. Without hesitation, I answered, "Danton."

Of course, there is some degree of excess and inaccuracy in the film--mind you, this comment comes from someone who has spent many years studying the Revolution--but its value as a historical drama of what boils down to springtime, 1794 Paris is ... Read More

This movie is exquisitely shot and directed, and the display of baroque opera segments is stunning. There is much validity in the dipiction of late baroque music and performance practice. The opening scenes of a warning to the child Carlo Bruschi by a suicidal castrato sets the tone for the curtained emotions of the hero. Highly recommended and a must-buy for music history fans.

This is one of those great movies that is extremely under-rated. Xica is an African slave in Brazil who overcomes her bonds of slavery and masters her master using her feminine wiles. This is definitely a must-see movie!
