VHS : Surviving Picasso
I have looked for this movie for years to come on DVD...but alas it hasn't happened yet. This movie, which is based on a book, truly shows what it was like to have to live (or 'survive' as you will) with someone who is egocentric and artistic. I don't understand why people wanted this movie to explain Picasso as a person...the title tell you its about someone who SURVIVED Picasso. This man didn't want to be understood. He didn't care about that so appreciate this movie for what it is, a great example of how someone can almost be 'swallowed' whole by another larger than life figure but who is able to transcend all that and stand on their own in the end. This movie has so many great aspects to it outside of the acting so I urge people to give this movie a chance because it is a fantastic journey ... Read More

VHS : Lust for Life
Excellent portrayal of the life of Vincent Van Gogh. With the inclusion of Van Gogh's actual work, it is a visual delight.

Yes. Absolutely. You're busted by this film (you know whom you are) and you STILL will not admit it. Classic.

The-Powers-That-Be (or think that they "Be", incorrectly, I must add) in Hollywood should produce this movie in English.

There is a DEMAND for it. It would sell. Yep.

Yet the hypocritical, "tell-us-what-we-should-think" and "tell-us-what-we-should-do" people in Hollywood will never produce this in English.

Oh, no, they will not, for they are long-time admirers of socialism/communism. Fidel and Hugo Chavez are their heroes. Long live an economic system--socialism/communism--that has failed so often in history!!

Thankfully, not all of the actors and actresses in Hollywood are communists that fall down and worship Fidel or kiss Hugo's butt. ... Read More

Shadow Watcher
Nobody Drowns in Mineral Lake

Mention MOULIN ROUGE and most folks will think of Nicole Kidman and the ground-breaking 2001 musical in which she sang and danced to perfection.

However, back in 1952, there was another (non-musical) MOULIN ROUGE, and most people who remember this John Huston-directed classic consider it to be one of the greatest films of that decade.

It also produced a title song that has become a standard.

Huston's film received seven Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. It won for Art Direction and Costuming, but lost the top honor, as did HIGH NOON and THE QUIET MAN, to Cecil B. DeMille's THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH. [Go figure!]

Visually stunning, MOULIN ROUGE stars Oscar-nominated Jose Ferrer as both famed artist ... Read More

VHS : Andrei Rublev
I watched this movie two days ago and can't stop thinking about it. It is also the first Tarkovsky film that I've seen. I've read quite a bit about his films, but this is the first one that I've watched. I mention this up front so that readers of this review can understand my perspective, I'm still trying to absorb what I saw. In short, this is an incredible, thought-compelling film, probably one of the best ever made. The praise for this film in some of the other positive Amazon reviews is well merited. It is a story about faith and about life, but mostly about figuring out what it is we are meant to do with our lives. Andrei Rublev is a painter of icons and cathedrals in the Orthodox Church in Russia during the late Middle Ages. As a young man he is widely acknowledged as the best at his craft in Russia, and is summoned ... Read More

VHS : Rembrandt (1936)
This is an extraordinary film biography of the seventeenth century Dutch artist Rembrant Van Rijn. Why? In a word- Charles Laughton. His performance is nothing less than brillant, believable and unique. The film direction by the renown Alexander Korda is sympathetic and warm. The sets and actors appear to be exhumed from centuries past, so very real and of the period. You the viewer swear you have been propelled back in time. The legendary actress Gertrude lawrence, in a rare film performance, is featured, along with Laughton's real life wife- Elsa Lanchester. Both fine actresses. The movie is somewhat philosophical. Laughton expouses deep felt emotions about his wife and the Bible. It is touching beyond words to this reviewer, the sense of emotion and heart felt love for his wife and his awe of the Biblical kings of the Old Testament. ... Read More

VHS : The Agony and the Ecstasy
An impressive film that should be in any film buff's library. The scenery, acting and story are very well done. Some license is taken with the lives of both Michelangelo and Pope Julius II. However, the acting and exchanges between Heston as Michelangelo and Rex Harrison as Julius II is superb. Introduction to the film provides important views and impressions of the Vatican setting and the spectacular creation of the famous ceiling painted by Michelangelo. A must see film.

I FIRST SAW THIS FILM ON THE BIG SCREEN, AND IN THE DARKNESS SCRIBBLED SOME OF ITS LINES ON A PIECE OF PAPER, TO USE LATER IN A POEM ABOUT THE PROTAGONISTS. I BECAME SO OBSESSED WITH IT THAT A FRIEND BROUGHT IT TO ME FROM MEXICO. IT IS ONE OF THE GREATEST FILMS OF ALL TIME, BUT UNFORTUNATELY IT NEVER HAS MADE IT INTO DVD FORMAT. I CANNOT RECOMMEND IT TOO HIGHLY. MY FAVORITE LINE; WHEN PROUST LOCKS HIMSELF FOR A WEEK IN HIS ROOM WHILE CELESTE KEEPS WATCH OUTSIDE. WHEN HE COMES OUT, SHE SHAKES HIM UP WHILE ASKING AT THE TOP OF HER LUNGS WHY HE HAD DONE THAT TO HER. AND HE ANSWERS: "I JUST WANTED TO KNOW WHAT DEATH FELT LIKE".

VHS : Beaumarchais the Scoundrel
I can't comment on the historical accuracy, but from what I do know of Beaumarchais I would say they succeeded with flying colours in representing his character, aswell as the atmosphere of the time. While the film is light-hearted and very funny, it doesn't take the easy option of caracaturising him as a cheeky libertine but also explores his serious ideals, which are essential to understanding the plays (and operas). And then of course there's the added bonus of the incredible Fabrice Lucchini who is equally at home creating the twinkle-eyed scoundrel, the passionate idealist, and the ordinary man who nervously awaits the verdicts of censors and public. I'd give it 6 stars if I could.

A relaxed feeling, wonderful sound and music, beautiful cinematography, unusual Paris locations and... its hilarious.I've seen many films from all over the world - I keep coming back to this one. No matter how many times I've seen it I find something new. Very different from Aki Kaurismaki's "Leningrad Cowboys". Cameo apperances by Louis Malle and Sam Fuller. Matti Pellonpaa, who plays Rodolfo in the film, died not too long after the release. One of my all-time favorite films.
