I know that this is quite different from the original story, but it's still a good movie. It's Hollywood-ized, but it's not so Hollywood-ized that it just flings Benny back into Jack's arms as if nothing happened.

I hadn't watched this and years and popped the DVD in to see if I wanted to keep it or resell it. I think I'll keep it. I'd forgotten how good a movie it is. It's such a relief these days to see a film with so many reasonable, believable characters when so many movies now seem to sell themselves on outlandishness.

It was HUGELY refreshing to see a girl who really is big--tall and solid--playing a character that's supposed to be big. She is not at all unattractive and is not portrayed as plain, awkward, or "nerdy" (as un-beauties usually are). She's ... Read More

Am I the only one that's paying attention to what's on this page or are these reviews being sent to the wrong page? All the reviews I've read here are for a completely different movie! "Cry in the Wild: The Taking of Peggy Ann" is a made for TV movie (1991) based on the true story of Peggy Ann Bradnick's 1966 abduction by a deranged mountain man (played by David Morse) that led to the largest manhunt in Pennsylvania history. The screenplay was written by Durrell Royce Crays. The abduction and subsequent manhunt was also detailed in the book "Deadly Pursuit" by Robert Cox.

I'm no Gloria Steinem but as a woman I found this way to "men hating" and all that. To me, it made women look horrible and really stuck to the bad stereotype of women. Blah! Bad accents don't help either.

VHS : Revolution (1985)
I think its easily the best movie about the American Revolution. The A&E videos of TV pressentations of "The Crossing" and "Benedict Arnold" are also very good. While how good it is is a matter of opinion, anyone who thinks that Gibson's silly movie is better doesn't know much about American history. This movie has the feeling of the 1770s and the criticism of Pacino's and Kinsky's accents is amusing. The residents of the americas came from every corner of the earth and regional accents were numerous. Who knows how anyone sounded?

The real disappointment is that the available Portuguese region one dvd has very disappointing video quality. But at least it IS widescreen. But I am looking forward to a decent U.S. release. I suspect the dvd import is pirated.

But its great how controversial ... Read More

VHS : Ivanhoe (1982)
I'm 40 now, but saw this as a fourteen-year old girl. What I remember:
-Sam Neill was a thrilling villain--handsome, diabolical, and exciting. One of Britain's underestimated talents (see him in My Brilliant Career also--another favorite at 14).
-Olivia Hussey, one of the world's most beautiful women, was poignant and admirable in her defence against above villain. If the Olivia name craze hadn't taken place, I would have named my daughter Olivia because of her. (I also didn't because I only had sons. Oh, yeah.) Catch her as Juliet in Romeo & Juliet or as Mary in Jesus of Nazareth.
-My friends thought the actor who played Ivanhoe was "a babe" ("hot" in today's terminology) but he didn't make much of an impression on me at the time. (Fortunately, I do prefer nice men now.)

I'm hoping to show ... Read More

Colin Welland may have won an Oscar for his Chariots of Fire (Two-Disc Special Edition), but in his adaptation of the Louis Pergaud novel set in the early 1900's France and later filmed by Yves Robert in 1962, this move to Ireland lacks the playfulness and innocence of the original and makes these kids from two rival camps way more brutal and warmongering with hateful language. As an Irishman, all I can say is "Why do we keep doing this to ourselves?" Sorry, but this film is full of hateful words, destructive and nearly criminal behaviour that makes Irish lads from Carricks and Bally to be nothing more than Montagues and Capulets from Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet and the Sharks and the Jets from West Side Story (Special Edition DVD Collector's Set). This is not a film about the playfulness and innocence of childhood, but rather ... Read More

VHS : Metroland
If you liked the 1985 classic The Big Chill which took a look at "thirtysomething" America as it froze it's '60's free-spirit into a glacier of forgotten aspirations, then Metroland is worth your while.A simpler and more intimate film than it's American cousin,"Metroland" is the English equivalent of watching the hippie-dippy days of bell-bottomed pants, pot and free love melting into the frozen tundra of Bourgeoisieland- or so we are lead to believe.Simple in plot and heavy in truly adept acting,"Metroland" tells the story of the comfortable married life of Chris and Marion Lloyd (Christian Bale and Emily Watson),a young thirtyish couple in the middle class neighborhood of Edgewood. They have a child, successful careers and the "English garden".Sex is at least every other day.So, what could be the problem?
Chris' boyhood best-bud Toni ... Read More
