This movie is exquisite; Catherine Deneuve is so beautiful, her wardrobe so perfect, that it is hard to concentrate at times. When you see her whipping one of her slaves, you cannot fathom such cruelty and beauty together - but that is the cost exacted by colonialism.
When she chooses to use her influence to have Vincent Perez (Jean-Baptiste) sent away, I wanted to scream "no, no, don't do it, can't you see what will happen?" No man will choose a woman of a certain age, no matter how lovely and fascinating, over a young woman who can bear him children. Nature does not allow it.
The loveliest scene is when Jean-Baptiste is baptising their son in the pool; the most horrific the slave market which he witnesses and is supposed to be supporting.
As lovely as the cinematography ... Read More

This beautiful film may not be for everyone, but it's quiet attention to the details of home life, indoors and out, through the eyes of a young girl starting work in a household in 1951 Vietnam, and then the young adult girl 10 years later, is somehow sublime. The beauty of the setting, the sheer humanity of the people portrayed, and the girl's state of consciousness, for want of a better way to put it, add up to a fascinating experience. Some call it a Vietnamese Cinderella. It's that and more. I loved it.

This movie was playing at a local film festival and I almost didn't go. I mean I had heard good things about it, but the description seemed a little too much like Salaam Bombay (Widescreen Special Edition). You got the innocent kid trying to get money to go back to his village. The older sister being led into prostitution and the pimp that is both a cause of grief and a product of his society. My girlfriend at the time didn't want to see it and usually I follow her lead in terms of dreary melodramas but for some reason we went.

And it was like nothing we thought it'd be. For one thing, the pimp doesn't do much but smoke. Every scene he's in, he's smoking. Sometimes he's reciting poetry. In one scene he's obviously stabbed a guy, only you don't see the stabbing. You just see him hovering around ... Read More

THE VERTICAL RAY OF THE SUN (made in 2001) was my official introduction to Vietnamese cinema, and, I must say this is a very beautiful and evocative piece. Set in modern day Hanoi, Vietnam, it examines the lives of a group of brothers and sisters (in law) living together, following the death of their parents. The deceptively placid atmosphere thinly veils the thick and complicated family dynamics (as well as secrets) that eventually threaten to tear this closely knit family unit apart. What's more, all of this drama features the crooning of Velvet Underground vocalist Lou Reed, as part of the haunting (and slightly sinister) soundtrack and musical backdrop, as well as gorgeous cinematography. Every scene appears illuminated and drips with bold color (rich greens, strong reds). This offsets beautiful shots of flora and fauna, as well as the actors' faces.
