Many think that Sean Connery was the first actor to impersonate the role of the sophisticated British agent; when in fact he wasn't. Sean was the first actor to play bond in a "theatrical" movie. But in 1954, 8 years before Dr. No hit the screens, 007 was introduced for the first time on Television broadcast.

The movie was called Casino Royale, based on the first novel by Ian Fleming. The movie was adapted from this novel for a CBS broadcast, with the hopes of adapting more of Ian Fleming's novels on TV...but the broadcast was pretty much bashed by critics and ignored by viewers. The movie was broadcasted only once and lost. It was later found and re-broadcasted in the 1990's for TBS, part of a James Bond movie marathon. Thought the problem with that version that was re-aired ... Read More

VHS : Latcho Drom
Latcho Drom is mesmerizing, the people magical and the music unforgettable.

There is no dialogue, but this does nothing to detract from the film's integrity or entertainment value. Although Rom diaspora has resulted in the Roma living in just about every country on earth, Latcho Drom provides the viewer with a coup d'oeil of the Roma people in Africa, Egypt, Turkey, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, France and Spain.

The Romanian Roma (the two are mutually exclusive), instantly pulled me under their spell. Upon first impression, the Romanian "gypsies" might look like a ragtag band of amateurs. In short order, however, this misconception is swiftly dispelled as these musical maestros fill the air with their art - all deftly orchestrated and delivered.

I ordered Lion King from Guilov and never received it. Of course they took my money. After repeated attempts to get them to send me Lion King they never did. This company shuld not be in business and shame on Amazon.com for associating with them. Do not order anything from these guys because you are likely to lose your money.

VHS : Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown
Pedro Almodovar, an internationally and critically acclaimed Spanish director, takes eccentricity and neuroses to new heights in WOMEN ON THE VERGE OF A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN, one of his most well known films. Pepa (Carmen Maura), an actress, has just been left alone and pregnant by her lover. It turns out that this situation is only one of many problems that she encounters. Her friend, Candela (Maria Barranco) is having a crisis of her own. Then, there's the matter of the gazpacho that Pepa has prepared--spiked with thirty sleeping pills--but, I won't ruin that part of the story for you as to what prompts her to prepare such a sleep-inducing dish. The whole mood is comparable to a telenovela (Spanish language soap opera). The atmosphere is melodramatic (hence, the reason for the title), desperate ... Read More

VHS : "Ay, Carmela!"
Even if you do not know a lot about the Spanish Civil War, you will enjoy this incredible movie about that time period in history. There is comedy, tragedy, pathos, suspense and wisdom in this story of a piece of the war as seen through the eyes of two traveling entertainers who happen to land up in the wrong place at the wrong time. The film crescendos to an ending of hope, believe it or not. It does not matter if you understand Spanish, the subtitles are excellent and the performances are superb. I have even used this film for an AP Spanish class of high school seniors and it left a lasting impression on them!

VHS : Marvin the Martian: Space Tunes
This was part 1 of a 2 part collection originally released in 1998. The second part was titled "Marvin the Martian: 50 Years on Earth". A year or so later, both tapes were combined and released together, simply titled "Space Tunes". If you want all 12 cartoons, either purchase the newer "Space Tunes"(if you can find it) or purchase both this earlier version (1998) and "50 Years on Earth".
For this particular tape, 3 of the 6 cartoons feature Marvin the Martian, "Hasty Hare" (1952), "Duck Dodgers in the 24 1/2 Century" (1953), and "Hare-way to the Stars" (1958). Marvin was always my favorite Warner Bros character, with his ego far exceeding his diminutive size, his Roman gladiator armor, his cultured manner of speaking, and all the ultra-cool spaceage toys he had to accomplish his missions.

VHS : I Don't Want to Talk About It (VHS)
This is a delightful film by Argentine director Maria Luisa Bemberg (who directed her first film at age 56! - an inspiration to us all). The movie takes place in a small Argentine town by the name of San Jose de los Altares, some time in the 1930s. Like most small towns, it is a place filled with hypocrisy and gossip. When the movie opens, the camera catches the town priest without his pants (literally) in bed with his mistress, and we soon discover that the brothel is the place to go if you're looking for the mayor or other important town figures. Despite their peccadilloes, the town folk strive to keep up appearances. It is in this environment that Leonor attempts to "hide" the undeniable reality that her daughter is a dwarf. Leonor insists that it never be mentioned and attempts to compensate for Carlota's ... Read More
