This was a great collection of sorted movies. These are the classics that will endure the passing of time and only Gets better. Absolute family favorites - if not already - both your home and mine.

VHS : Burnt by the Sun
This excellent movie is beautifully photographed, deeply affecting, intricate but clear, and it illustrates the monstrous abuse a totalitarian government perpetrates upon its citizens and their heroic battles against it. I highly recommend it.

VHS : Little Indian, Big City
This movie is poor in every dimension. The most egregious of its inadequacies is the director's inability to tell such a simple story. Any scene of impending interest is killed; leaving the feeling that the director is trying to create a movie out of loosely related short vignettes, thus deliberately downplaying anything that could be mistaken for a plot. The only reason I finished this movie was because I could not believe how bad it was. I have turned off many a "better" movie. This could be ranked as one of the ten worst directed movies in history. Unfortunately, you can not rank something as zero stars on Amazon.

Dersu Uzala (Akira Kurosawa, 1975)

As much as I understand the importance of Akira Kurosawa in the greater language of film, I have to say that I've never really gotten his movies the way other people seem to; Rashomon is a movie I've watched a number of times trying to glean what it is that makes it, as many critics would have it, one of the hundred finest films ever made, and I just can't wrap my head around it. It's a good movie, to be sure, but I guess I'm missing something. I felt the same way about Dersu Uzala, now that I've seen it for the first time; I enjoyed it well enough, but nothing about it struck me as being for the ages.

Uzala himself (Maksim Munzuk) is a woodsman, who makes his living trapping and serving as a guide in the wilds of Taiga. He is hired by Vladimir ... Read More

VHS : Mussorgsky's Bolshoi Opera Boris Godunov
This is a spectacular feast in all respects, with brilliant vocalism, an absolutely gorgeous production (filmed live at the Bolshoi in 1978), and an all-too-lush reorchestration of Mussorgsky's masterpiece by his friend and colleague Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. Rimsky's version smooths out Mussorgsky's rough edges, substituting charming detail and sensuous scoring for the more visceral original orchestration by the composer himself. The result is a sort of sauve and erudite vision of what should be a gutsy, shocking musical experience, very different from the original orchestration. However, from this "prettified" version the singers here draw all possible emotion and drama, aided by the realistic and stunning production, which alone should recommend the film to you! Veteran conductor Boris Khaikin leads a phenomenal ... Read More

VHS : Tchaikovsky - The Nutcracker / Maximova, Vasiliev, Bolshoi
This Nutcracker is by and for Adults. Other reviewers have ably noted the facts about what choices were made by the choreographer. Whether you like or dislike those choices is an individual preference. I liked the choices and enjoyed the opportunity to focus on the superb dancing without distractions. Maximova and Vasiliev dance wonderfully. Some of the other dancers are out-of-sync at times but it didn't bother me much. What I look for is an overall spontaneity which I did find in this performance.

As for the flaws, there are two areas which detract. One, the visual. Two, the aural.

As for the visual, the stage and sets look very dark. I can't help but think that in person it did not look so gloomy. I suspect that the video production was poorly chosen and executed. Wrong cameras? ... Read More

After having read a few books and scene numerous documentaries on the subject. The World at War series did a great job on this. I had to purchase this movie even knowing the reviews here were mixed. I agree with many reviews on both sides. Overall I would say this to be a good movie though. It was well made and acted. My only complaint is they tend to portray the german soldiers as cry babies, deserters, remorseful, disobedient, and un-tough. I'd say that's very far from the real truth. The german soldier was as good as he was because he wasn't any of those things. Obviously with so many german soldiers in this battle you would find some of these kinds of people but all together in one company? That's hard to believe. I'd say the majority of them were not remorseful at all. And they surely wouldn't have survived as long as they did ... Read More

VHS : Chef In Love
It's easy to see why this film didn't get anywhere, as it represents the other side of French film -- wooden, stereotypical characters and actors so cynical that they can't pull it off. The absence of chemistry between the lovers in this film made it interminable to sit through. It was difficult to observe Pierre Richard's loving smiles at her when his eyes and body language were like steel only when with her, but free everywhere else. The interrupting narrative was probably a bad idea, as it interjected just when things seemed to be getting moving. Not to mention that the scenes with the revolutionaries, although the lines seemed believable, were filmed in such a stilted way that no one could come across without being a laughable Russian caricature. In that regard, it was highly disrespectful to the plight of the deeply oppressed, ... Read More

VHS : Andrei Rublev
I watched this movie two days ago and can't stop thinking about it. It is also the first Tarkovsky film that I've seen. I've read quite a bit about his films, but this is the first one that I've watched. I mention this up front so that readers of this review can understand my perspective, I'm still trying to absorb what I saw. In short, this is an incredible, thought-compelling film, probably one of the best ever made. The praise for this film in some of the other positive Amazon reviews is well merited. It is a story about faith and about life, but mostly about figuring out what it is we are meant to do with our lives. Andrei Rublev is a painter of icons and cathedrals in the Orthodox Church in Russia during the late Middle Ages. As a young man he is widely acknowledged as the best at his craft in Russia, and is summoned to ... Read More

VHS : Nostalghia
When Andrei Tarkovsky went to Italy in 1982 to start shooting Nostalghia, he vowed never to return to his home in the Soviet Union. Although I do not profess to fully comprehend Tarkovsky's film, which won the Grand Prix Spécial du Jury at the 1983 Cannes Film Festival, it is not essential to understand the film to appreciate its breathtaking visual qualities. Words fall short in describing this film, which tells the story of a Russian writer, Andrei Gorchakov (Oleg Yankovsky) who, like Tarkovsky, experiences profound feelings of displacement (or "nostalghia") upon traveling to Italy to research the life of an 18th century Russian composer. The "nostalgia" Gorchakov experiences in Italy is not for his Russian homeland, but for a deeper connection with all of humanity. The film's narrative frequently shifts to dream-like sequences. Several scenes in ... Read More
