As a Romanian who grew up in Canada, when I saw this movie I was shocked and challenged. I knew that this kind of thing happened, even to my own family, but to see it represented in such a dark and realistic fashion made it even more real to me. The movie runs the full range of emotions, from black humour to horror to dispair. Everyone who has gone through this should see it and everyone who hasn't gone through this should see it too, to appreciate our freedom.

I love this movie...it tells a great story.

I like the fact that it is a quiet movie that speaks more on a personal level than just action and blowing things up. A good drama.

I can watch this over and over. I LOVE sci-fi.

What makes a good movie a great experience?: great acting, fantastic music, unforgettable scenes, sweet humour and the aroused urge to be right there with those people in the movie. This flick has it all! I have seen it 5 times now. After each viewing I left the screen smiling in my heart and feeling very happy. I don't know how many more times I will watch it, but I sure talk about it whenever the best movie subject is brought up in the conversation. May all of you enjoy it!

VHS : La Promesse
We played La Promesse for our film society on a dark and snowy night. The response was sensational. Thinking people really seem to like this film; perhaps the straight-forward, no comments narrative allows us viewers to form our own opinions. This is a tough subject, told in a hard style, but it has the redemptive punch of the most hopeful Bressons (think Pickpocket or Women of the Boulogne Woods). The performance by Jeremie Renier is up there with anything Roddy McDowell did as a young actor; Olivier Gourmet is terrific in the ambiguity he brings to his role as the boy's father. In a very quiet and non-preachy way, this film talks to the future of Europe, the question of whether morality matters in a free market world, and the ties that family arouses in most of us. This is a great movie that ... Read More

Krzysztof Kieslowski was one of the more interesting filmmakers of the last quarter century, and the centerpiece of his claim to greatness is the Three Colors (Trois Couleurs) trilogy of films that he wrote and directed in the early to mid-1990s, filming them all at the same time. Blue, White, and Red represent the three colors of the French flag, and symbolize the three virtues of liberty, equality, and fraternity respectively. Blue (Bleu) is the first film in the series, and was released in 1993. The color blue also resonates for its associations with depression and coldness, that are well demonstrated in the film. It was deserving of the many award sit garnered, such as winning Best Film at the Venice Film Festival and the Goya Awards, as well as star Juliette Binoche (who looks like a prettier Julia ... VHS : Under the Roofs of Paris
In 1930, movies with sound were still a relative novelty, and while American films of that era ("The Jazz Singer", etc.) mostly tried to outdo each other with being as loud and shrill as possible and the music was center stage, the French did a film that is tasteful and restrained in its use of sound, and sometimes even reverts back to silent film, perhaps only to remind us to savor the next time sound appears. Why am I not surprised?

I already knew the chanson that is also the main theme of the movie (and in fact one of the little jokes in the film involves panning around an apartment house only to find no one can get that ditty out of their heads, to the chagrin of some of the other tenants), so I was naturally interested to see if the movie it came from was any good. And it is. René Clair knows that his plot is banal, but then again ... Read More
