VHS : Xica
This is one of those great movies that is extremely under-rated. Xica is an African slave in Brazil who overcomes her bonds of slavery and masters her master using her feminine wiles. This is definitely a must-see movie!

2.Pixote starring: Fernando Ramos da Silva, Jorge Julião, Gilberto Moura, Edilson Lino, Zenildo Oliveira Santos

VHS : Pixote
Ten-year-old Pixote (Portuguese slang word for, "PeeWee")is one of the millions of homeless children in Brazil. He is arrested in a typical police round-up and placed in their vesion of the United States Junenvile detention centers. although them film is about the kids down in Brazil, some 20 years ago.... You would be surprised to know,... that the US system is not much better, today, than what is portrayed in this movie! The kids in the US judical and foster care systems are treated pretty much the same way as these kids are treated 20 years ago in a third world country! Some people may look at this film and say, " Oh those poor kids down there in Brazil....", but what they don't know is that nothing has changed down there and it is much the same with the kids here... in America!!!

VHS : How Tasty Was My Little Frenchman
Set aside the profusion of naked flesh in this movie. It remains a fascinating take on what it would be like to be captured by cannibals. Immediately, I thought of the parallels between this film and the true story of Herman Melville's capture by the vicious cannibal Typees (Chronicled in his awesome first novel "Typee".) But the sense of tension and fear are constant and effective. At every moment you find yourself aware that this Frenchman is going to be eaten. Later in the movie, we even learn that the woman who became his "wife" did so partly because that would ensure her a choice bit of the Frenchman's meat. This is just a fascinating movie that I highly recommend.

VHS : City of God (Sub)
It has a disturbing and thought-propvoking plot. It shows what life has in store for many kids in one of Rio de Janeiro's ghettos, City of God. They learn to kill, rob, and sell drugs to get rich. Most of them will end up being killed.

The acting look real. The surprising thing is most of them are non-professional actors.

The film is interesting from the beginning till the end. If you like movie dealing with social issues. This is definitely for you. It's the best movie from Brazil so far.

I loved this movie when I saw it on the big screen years ago. It may never be put in DVD format. It was a wonerful film but not a box office hit. It's a lot of fun to watch. So if you still have a VHS player go for it.

6.Black Orpheus starring: Maria Alice, Elizeth Cardoso, Aurino Cassiano, Alexandro Constantino, Arlete Costa

This movie has long been among my favorites. Had it been in English it would get 5 stars. It is this reading that takes away from the beauty of the film. Gritty and real. For me, knowing the story, I really don't have to read, and I can focus on the unusual Beauty. There are some flaws but what it clearly does is gives you a sense of place. You ARE in Rio during carnival....and if you can watch this movie without once getting on your feet...you just don't get it. Enjoy!!

7.Kiki's Delivery Service starring: Kirsten Dunst, Minami Takayama, Rei Sakuma, Kappei Yamaguchi, Keiko Toda

I always wanted to know if there was a film made from the classic novel "One hundred years of solitude", and this is it! The only problem is that this is only a part of the book.
This film was not what I expected, but it kept me entertained.

10.O Amor Natural directed by: Heddy Honigmann

VHS : O Amor Natural
Hedy Honigmann is one of my favorite documentary makers. From an interview with her I destilled one of my life mottoes: 'Cynicism is deadly'. With this film, which I went to see with my grandmother, at the time in her late eighties but as bubbly and candid as the Brazilian oldtimers in the film, Honigmann introduced me to the writings of Carlos Drummond d'Andrade, and I'm thankful to her. I wish I could get the film on DVD now, but alas. Also the poems are not widely available. In Portugese, if you're lucky. In English? Haven't found them, though several occasions I would have liked to share them. In Dutch, when the film came out, brilliantly translated by Pessoa-translator August Willemsen. But, sadly, now not in print and hardly available second hand, as no-one who has them seems to want to part with them. So if you have ... Read More
